Question:
High fiber/Low carb foods?
I've been having a horrible time with constipation. I've tried Benefiber, MOM, stool softeners, etc. I drink at least 70oz. of water plus another 10-15oz. of other liquids a day and exercise at least 4 times a week. I think it comes down to the fact that I'm just not getting enough fiber. I need some ideas of low carb, but high fiber foods. I love cereals (tried Hi-Lo and hated it) but haven't found one low in carbs. Thanks so much for your help. Amy lap RNY 9/24/03 -90 — Amy M. (posted on February 16, 2004)

I had the same problem but mine was the iron it was just making things
really bad. so I stopped it. and my iron is fine still thats been about 8
mos. what I do now cause it was still somewhat of a problem is i eat a few
dried apricots and about 1/3 cup of cereal with 2 spoons of flax seed
ground up on it. I grind it in a coffee grinder and it works great. you can
probably buy it already ground up. flax is really good for you. I get it at
Raleys. I hope that is some help. good luck

Amy - I put about 1T of Kellogs All Bran cereal on my yogurt each morning.
I hate it by itself, but in cottage cheese or yogurt it's not bad. The
carbs read high (23g per 1/2 cup serving), but once you subtract the fiber
(10g) and get the net carbs (13g), it's not bad.

I helps to add a variety of fresh veggies to your plate also. I have also
noticed that constipation tends to be a problem for me. And the veggies
always seem to help. Buy some of the bags of mixed greens and have a salad
with lots of meat in it for your lunches. For dinner I steam broccoli or
have a stir fry of some sort with mixed veggies in it. Experiment and have
fun!

I do 1/2 C of Fiber One (highest fiber cereal on the market, or so they
say) every day as well as other high fiber foods. In order to avoid the
danger of colon cancer as well as keeping regular, you should do at least
25 g of fiber. With 14g in the cereal alone, you are more than halfway
there. Fruit, veggies and whole grain products make up the rest. As far
as the carbs go,the fiber is not digestible, so we don't utilize any of
it's nutrients. I think Fiber One has 24g or so total carbs, with 10g net.
Since it isn't the "bad" type of carb, I don't worry about it
and have had no problems - like clockwork! :)

I keep milk of magnesia on hand because I have the same problem. Haven't
found a food yet that will help so I take the MOM about every three to four
days. Sugar alcohol will do it for me though in a most UNPLEASANT way.

Are you eating salads, fresh veggies, and fruit? All of those help
tremendously. Don't worry about the carb content of them - they're good
carbs, and shouldn't hurt your weight loss at all.

Constipation has been a big problem for me too - I eat a lot of hot cereal
and love them. I also add some ground flax seed to them even though they do
have quite a bit of fiber.

Try "Mini Carb Chocolate Instant Hot Cereal"

and

Carbsense Country Spice Hot Cereal

I am 2 1/2 months out and I also have a terrible time with constipation. I
was only going 1 a week if lucky. I tried everything and nada. Finally,
and those with sensitive eyes lol close them....my husband gave me a fleet
enema...just the saline one....works like a charm. Not the most pleasant
but better than not going at all.
