Question:
Does diet caffine free soda count as fluid?

I know that caffine is a diuretic so that would not count, but I tried some caffine free Diet Rite Raspberry soda today and it was DELICIOUS!! I am wondering if that counts towards liquid intake since there's no sugar, carbs, fat, calories or caffine. Also, the Diet Rite is made with Splenda which I hear is better for you than that asparthame stuff. I also like diet A&W root beer, which is also sugar free and caffine free, but does contain asparthame. Would that count toward fluid intake also? I drink 70 to 100 oz of water a day and would just like to enjoy a different drink every so often. Thanks in advance!!    — Jennifer H. (posted on February 3, 2004)

Persoanally I would drink other things for your intake, my surgeon does allow diet sodas but since carbonation isn't the greatest for you anyways I choose other things! Good Luck!

Well technically it could count as a fluid, but we're not supposed to drink soda.

My doc and dietician say to count anything as liquid as long as it is sugar free, caffein free, and non-carbonated. They both also say, if we get rid of the carbonation in soft drinks, that counts as part of our liquid, also. Both also tell me that the real harm with carbonation is that it is painful to us. I find this to be very true! But, if I allow the soda to go flat, I'm fine with it.

I'm 9 days post op...my Dr. allows diet soda (flattened of course) and what i found strange is he doesn't want me to have protien drinks, he said they are too high in calories. He wants all my liquids to be calorie free.

My surgeon allows his patients to have caffiene free diet sodas at about 6 months ( for me it was 8 months) He says it does count in your liquid intake. I also drink a lot of caffiene free tea sweetened with splenda. Slenda doesn't make me crave sweet stuff like aspartame does. You really need to ask your surgeon for all surgeons have different oppinions on this..Best of luck to you!!
