Question:
How do I get rid of the skin sores on the lower stomach where the excess skin is now?
I am at 7 1/2 months post op and for the last 2 months have been experiencing a burn like sore on my lower stomach under my stomach roll. Not sure what to do to get rid of it. I have been using Gold Bond Medicated Wipes for about a month and it helps some, but doesn't take it away completely. It is extremely itchy and bleeds on the surface sometimes. Any help is awesome!! — Kristina H. (posted on December 12, 2003)

Kristina,
First - take photos! Document in a diary or journal when it started, what
it's like, etc. Then see your PCP - sounds like a bad yeast infection.
Instead of using a wipe, maybe using a medicated powder (something drying)
would be beneficial. I had horrible yeast infections under my panni, too -
before it got cut off.
If you have friendly insurance, this could be your ticket to an
insurance-covered TT!

I agree that it's important to call your PCP to get the rash documented in
your medical record. Do this every time you get a rash. It will likely be
critical evidence of medical necessity should a panniculectomy (aka tummy
tuck)be necessary in the future. I've done this, and my doctor has
prescribed a cream (fortunately covered by my Rx medical plan). But, I've
gotten these rashes for years because my overweight abdomen always had a
panni associated with it. I found the best way to treat it was with diaper
rash ointment (avoid the brands with cod liver oil--it doesn't help the
rash any, and you smell like cat food!), followed by a sprinkling of
corn-starch-based baby powder. If the rash is very bad, you'll need to do
this twice a day. That rememdy has worked better than the cream my PCP
prescribed, but I still call every time I get a rash and get him to write a
prescription. I'm definitely going to need a TT, and want the insurance to
recognize it as medically necessary, not cosmetic. Best wishes.

Get it documented by pcp but if not possible, try Zeasorb AF powder
available over the counter from the pharmacy. Good stuff!!!

First, be sure to keep the area washed with soap and water. I take the
kind of kleenex with lotion in it, fold it carefully and place it between
the fold and stomach. The weight of the stomach will hold it against the
skin. It always takes away the rash and pain for me.

As everyone said, first document. Then, if it smells worse than words can
describe, it's yeast. The only way that worked for me and was suggested by
my derma was to wash & dry, then apply antifungal. Marilyn suggested
powder, my derma didn't like powder or cornstarch) and said it made the
yeast happy. However, not sure she was speaking of an anti-fungal powder,
or indeed there was such a thing back then. She recommended an anti-fungal
cream like Lotrimin. In the athlete's foot section of the store. Wash
& dry & apply AF 3 times per day for a few days, then 2 times per
day and once it is clear and healthy again, once a day til the day of your
TT or til it flares up again. Then go back to wash, dry, apply. You have
to wash the yeast OFF before you are stopping the action. Then apply a
barrier to discourage them from coming back.

for me the trick was keeping it dry. i take a panty liner and fold it in
half (sticky sides together) and put it under my stomach roll.

What i have done for the rashes I have goten LONG before RNY surgery, I
have always had a gut- was to take Desitin baby diaper rash cream and apply
it to the rash. It dries it out pretty good. It never really goes away
and the cream the DR gave me made it worse.

SKIN INFECTIONS: If you tend to get the skin infections/commonly called
skin yeast infections under rolls of skin: stomach/or between the legs or
???: First, you will need to get it cleared up with an RX antiobiotic/keep
it clean and dry: Z-Sorb Powder is excellant (K-Mart) absorbs much more
mositure moisture... THEN, once it is completly healed... use a roll-on
deoderant in those areas daily. you will NEVER have that problem again !!
God Bless You.
