Question:
Hernia repair without mesh???

Is it possible for a surgeon to repair an incisional hernia without having to put in metal mesh? The hernia is pretty big and growing but I have to wait until I'm closer to goal to have it repaired. I am hoping the lower weight might improve my chances of it not returning and not needing mesh, I don't want to feel bionic. — Sarahlicious (posted on November 17, 2003)

I had my gallbladder out and an incisional hernia repair done four weeks ago. The surgeon did not use mesh. I had 24 staples and am doing fine. Sapala-Wood Micropouch 12/12/02 - 213/130/125.

I was just repaired, they did it LAP (instead of thru my open incision)- used mesh- I cant feel it as of yet- at least I dont think I can, besides, we have so much metal in our tummies aleady with all those staples...

If you do not use mesh you will have to have a repair for sure later. Mine only lasted 1 year without mesh. Even with the mesh it's not guaranteed to stay forever.

I had my hernia repair without a mesh. I was told by my surgeon that this was better than having a mesh because having a mesh causes could cause infection.

Um.. Bionic!!?! ;)

I had a 9" incisional horizontal hernia which was repaired open, 14 months ago. I healed well, and I have never "felt" it... our bodies have pretty thick skin, and that mesh is very thin, yet strong.

I would recommend this tutorial, from the Patient Education Institute:
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/tutorials/incisionalhernia/gs049301.html

According to literature on WebMD, complications like infections and reocurrance happen about 5% of the time.
Hope this helps, and eases your concerns.

I had several hernias repaired and had the surgical mesh put it. However, it is not metal. The mesh prevents further hernias from forming as it reinforces the abdominal wall.

I had a hernia that was large and developed an infection to the mesh. Check into a plastic surgeon that does a component separation method of abdominal reconstruction which is they disect the muscles of the abdominal was and pull them together to hold in the hernia..no mesh no infections but probably not covered by insurance..that is where i am at now.
