Question:
Did I experience dumping?
Today I made a fruit salad using fat free coolwhip, fatfree cottage cheese, cushed pineapple packed in it's own juice and sugar free orange jello. I ate some and almost immediately I had to run to the bathroom with diahhrea and went 6 times before it stopped. No other symptoms. I am 41/2 months post op and down 75lbs. I have not yet dumped unless this was a mild case of it. Thanks! — cindylou56 (posted on November 15, 2003)

Yes, you did, indeed dump. 4 1/2 months may be too soon for you to be
eating pineapple. However, you will find, everyone is different. And,
from day to day, your own body will be different in it's own reaction to
different foods. Pineapple is very high in fructose. I have found one
day, I might be able to eat it and the next I can't. I'm eleven months
post-op. This is true for most fatty and sugary foods.

Cynthia,
I know quite a few RNY post-ops who dump on fresh fruit - of any kind. The
fructose is a sugar - although a much healthier form than refined sugar, of
course. The frustrating thing being that no one goes into RNY knowing
whether or not they will dump, to what level of severity, or for how long -
typically, according to the medical journals I've read and the post-ops
I've talked with - patients "outgrow" or "acclimate to"
dumping.
Sorry you had to go through this!
Blessings,
dina
