Question:
Do
I have purchased 4 or 5 Protein Bars to try out including the Atkins Advantage protein bar (Almond Brownie flavor) and while it has 21g of Protein, it has 21g of Carbohydrates. The Atkins bar, along with the others all claim that they are only sporting a "Net Carb" of 2 or 3 because of the "Fiber" and "Glycerin", etc. not having an impact on blood sugar. Does this only affect diabetics or those watching/controlling carbs? Or will this affect us as gastric bypass patients as well? I'm sort of hesitating to try these high carb/high protein bars, but if Atkins is putting them out, the theory seem "legit" to me. — Lynne D. (posted on October 29, 2003)

I eat Atkins bars on occasion, but not often. It fills the void when you
know you need to eat but not hungry for a lot. I wouldn't make a habit out
of them, but once in a while they are fine.

They are legit...many people who are MO get no impact from sugar alcohols
and fiber is not digested (except by good bacteria in the bowel that needs
it) so we don't 'have' to count it. The only problem I've had with the
Atkin's bars is they tend to give me very lose bowels.

As a pre-op, I did the Atkins diet for a while, and I used a lot of their
products. The net carb thing is for real, because if all of the carbs
listed on their products were being digested, I wouldn't have lost any
weight on Atkins, but I did lose a good bit. I'm post-op now, and I use
the chocolate-peanut butter protein bar occasionally. I can eat about 1/2
of it at a sitting. I don't use them all the time, just as a snack item
when I feel I need a little extra protein. If you're still pre-op don't
buy too many even if you like the taste. Wait until after surgery, as your
tastes may change. Mine sure did - things I liked before taste nasty now
sometimes. Good luck, and I must say I think most of the Atkins products
are good quality.
