Question:
Does anyone have this problem
My ankles swell especially my left one and not quite half way up my leg turns pink when I stand on them 8 hours at work. It got to the point I was in so much pain I could barely walk. I went to my PCP and he did blood work to check for gout but said my uric acid level was fine but I could still have gout. He prescribed naproxen 250mg. and it helps but legs and ankles are still swelling. Has anyone had this problem. I know I do not need to stay on this med. My surgeon says it is o.k. as long as I take it with food and tums before. Please anyone let me know. Thanks, Cynthia — cindylou56 (posted on October 16, 2003)

Are you pre op or post op? Be really careful with the naproxen as it can
cause an ulcer. I got one in spite of all the precautions. You may have the
beginnings of lymphadema. The redness and swelling could be the beginning
of fluid buildup. I HOWEVER AM NOT A DOCTOR AND THIS IS JUST MY OPINION

Cynthia, push your Dr to find the reason or go to another Dr. It could be
nothing it could be something more serious than gout (my hubby has gout). I
have had similar problems to waht you describe, pre-op. I even took
pictures of it when it was bad. Since my RNY my problem is still there but
it has gotten better. My old Dr didn't push to find answers and I could
have lost my leg (according to ym orthopedist). I learned from my new doc
that a number of things could cause such problems. Circulatory, kidney
function, and there is another type of problem out there which the name
escapes me right now. I will find out the name of it and email you later.
Many Dr's miss this last item in this list because they do not see it very
often. The condition requires special compression boots. Several people on
this forum have the problem. You really want it ruled out. I wear
compression socks now (for last 2 years) and I take diuretics every day. As
I loose weight the problem gets better. Best wishes -

I have had this problem a few times, I am a type 1 Diabetic so when I got
this I was quite concerned. I had and a couple of my friends have had (Not
foresure about the spelling) Cellulitous, which is an infection in the leg
and usually will be taken care of with an antibiotic. Also you should be
checked for a blood clot. If this does not get better, get a second opion.

Go back to your Doctor and push him/her to do more tests. My mom had that
problem and it turned out to be strep in her blood system. She needed to
take antibiotics. She will have this problem the rest of her life.
Whenever the leg turns red, she has to go on the antiobiotics. IT IS LIFE
THREATENING!
