Question:
question about smoking?
Hi I am now 7 mths. post op from rny, and before having this surgery I had quit smoking altogether, but now I am smoking again cuz of stress, etc. and wondering if anyone else smokes after having weight loss surgery? I now the risks of smoking altogether but I can't seem to want to quit again. I was also wondering how it has affected you after having surgery as in have any of you had any major problems after the fact with smoking and can it cause any major problems with your new pouch and all? thanks a bunch! — Melodee S. Hi Melodee. I am a smoker. I'm 3 months out. The only problem that I
know of, other than the ones that we all know about already, is that
smoking CAN cause ulcers with the new little pouch. It makes it easier for
the pouch to ulcerate. You might want to look on the library and see what
other info it might have. Good luck, Cheryl

Smoking is such a tough issue, and a real bugaboo...I too quit the
absolutely minimum one month pre-op, as required by my docs, then started
back again shortly after surgery. Then I quit for several months, then
started back again. Then quit, then started...you get the drill. How as
it affected me post-op? Well, according to my docs, it's probably the main
contributing factor to my ulcers...I know I've got to find the resolve to
quit - and STAY QUIT - once and for all...I've met my other goals, why not
this one? Anyway, try your best to quit, if possible. It's really the
best thing we can do, for our healthy new selves, n'est-ce pas?

I too quit for surgery, then started again. Maybe we can form a support
group within AMOS to help us quit again? I'm gonna give it a try October 1.

Me too, I am a post op smoker. If you are planning plastic surgery in your
future you will HAVE to quit or you will not heal properly. I figure that
is when I will stop and it is coming up soon. I discussed this with my
surgeon and he said that for this time my main focus is getting the weight
off and the smoking we will address later. Later is soon so wish me luck.
Doing thi WLS thing and quitting smoking would have made me insane not to
mention everyone I live with. Good luck.

I too quit smoking. I quit for 8 months prior to surgery and then for 4
months after surgery. I guess all of the stress of not eating, etc., I
started again. My surgeon is having a fit and I HAVE to quit as well. I
agree with one of the other posters about having a section for
"quitting" smoking. Good Luck darlin!
