Question:
Does the data on the Fobi Pouch suggest that more weight is lost with it than RNY?

Is the general feeling of the weight loss community that the Fobi pouch procedure is preferable for heavier individuals than the RNY, whether Lap or open? Do people lose more with the Fobi, and keep it off with better success than RNY? I understand the procedure, itself, and the added insurance the silastic ring gives, and I know Fobi is a more complicated procedure. I'm 350 lbs, at 5'6 1/2", and want to go the route that has the most effectiveness. I hear of RNY patients who have lost 100 lbs or so, but read of Fobi patients who have lost 175 pounds and up. What't the general feeling out there? In my original question, I asked about the "data" supporting more weight with Fobi, but really should ask more about the experiences of you out there. Please tell me. Thanks so much, Pam Cerda    — pam C. (posted on July 23, 2003)

I've heard general talk that a lot of Fobi people are unhappy but can give no specifics as to what the problems are. I can tell you that the DS is extremely effective, especially for higher weights (but equally so for any weight), and regain of weight beyond 10 or 20 lbs is virtually unheard of. That lack of regain has given me incredible peace of mind! You can find out all about it at http://duodenalswitch.com/. You could also join http://groups.yahoo.com/group/duodenalswitch/. I'm sure there is a Fobi group on Yahoo too. Chris, DS 6/11/02, 378-230, BMI 57-35, sz 38-18...so far!

Pam - no matter what procedure you have, it all depends how you "work the tool". I had an open RNY 07/17/02 (2 oz pouch, 75 cm bypassed) and I have lost 182 pounds as of my one-year checkup yesterday (plus another 13 pounds pre-op). There are loads of RNY patients that have lost well over 150 pounds other than me, too. There are several in my support group at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania that have lost over 200 pounds with the RNY...JR

I have lost about 200lbs. It depends on if one counts the 10lbs I lost before surgery. I had LAP RNY and a belt lipodectomy<sp?>. I excersize about 6 days a week. I eat 3 small (that's all I can eat) and a snack a day. I'm about 20 months out. If you use this tool you will loose weight. Good Lux
