Question:
I'm hungry for cereal. What cerea has very little carbs and sugar that I could have?

I've seen postings before and now can't find them regarding cereal. I'm 3 months post-op and tired of my breakfast options. When you list a cereal please list where I can buy it. I live in a very rural area. I have a Super Wal-mart and GNC that is near by but many places that are listed on this site we do not have near us. Thanks for your help.    — Lisa C. I found this in my local shop rite: Kashi GoLean Crunch. Its got 9g of protein (6.25 from Soy), High Fiber - 8 g, 13 gr sugar (but, from natural ingredients) a little bit of honey at the very end of the ingredient list. I've had it several times with no adverse reactions. And they do make several varieties. Do you have a Trader Joe's anywhere near you? I believe they carry it as well. Enjoy!

The Kashi Go Lean is good, too -- 8g protein, 28g carbs (but 10g are fiber), 7g sugar. The carbs are from mostly the fiber and whole grains, which are very healthy carbs.

Trader Joe carries a cereal called HI LO. Its very High in protein and low in carbs and sugar. The taste is OK, I add some splenda and a few raisins to it.

KETO (may be found at GNC near Low Carb products) has wonderful oatmeal cereal in various flavors with 17 g of protein. I didn't care for the cold KETO cereal (flakes where like cardboard). I also just tried Uncle Sam flakes with flaxseed this morning. The flakes are soft so it didn't take a lot of milk to moisten. I added a 1/4 pack of Splenda and it was really good plus flaxseed is good for the bowels. I missed eating cold cereal and was looking for a high protein cereal that was good. I purchased this box at Safeway. I was amazed that Total cereal only had 2 g of protein and with eating 2 tbsp it just seemed worthless to buy.

My surgeon told me i can have cereal about once a week as "fiber therapy" to keep me regular. He recommends Grape Nuts, plain Shredded Wheat, or any unsweetened hot cereal. (the cold cereals are very yummy with yogurt, and you can use Splenda or some very small fruit slices to sweeten up any cereal.) Just stick to your 2oz of it or you might have dumping reactions from the carbs. but these particular cereals are high in fiber and low in sugars so they are among the safest "non-specialty" cereals you can get. Good Luck. :)

I eat Quakers Old Fashioned oatmeal every morning for breakfast. I cook it in a stoneware bowl with water in the microwave, then add Splenda and a little milk. I also had Rice Chex with Splenda, but they made me feel a little yecky. Cereals are hard for us to do because they are starches and that converts to sugar. Good luck, Melisa RNY 08/15/02 -100 lbs

I am pre-op but am receiving loads of suggestions from my support group buddies and am trying them out now. My favorite so far is plain shredded wheat slightly "pulsed in the food processer, weigh out 2 oz., add a little milk, sprinkle on some Splenda then I drizzle on 1 oz of blenderized (pureed) strawberries - WHOOPIE! and YUM! How's that?

Trader Joe's is a breat source for healthy cereals. I also like the Hi-Lo cereal, which has 14 grams of protein in 1/2 cup and is pretty low in carbs (I don't remember the exact amt.). My favorite way to have cereal is to top it with sliced fruit like strawberries, peaches or bananas, then pour NSA yogurt over the whole thing. Yum!

I have eaten oatmeal, seven grain cereal, and Grape Nuts. They have lots of carbs but good fiber. Most of the lo-carb cereals are specialty and you'll have to order them online. Low Carb Success makes a cereal line that includes Flaxomeal (like instant oatmeal but only 2 gram of effective carbs--the rest are fiber!) and lo-carb granola (the taste is OK but the first ingredient is malitol--if you're sensitive to sugar alcohols beware!). I have also eaten Special K with yogurt, ricotta, or cottage cheese. I know, it sounds gross but it tastes good.
