Question:
Can someone tell me about left ventricular hypertrophy?
I had a stress test and an echo yesterday for preop testing. Dr decided at the last minute to do an echo since I have a history of high blood pressure. I was told that I have left ventricular hypertrophy, in other words in my case most likely mild heart failure. Has this detered anyone else's decision to have this surgery and did you get a second opinion from a cardiologist? Just wondering...thanks...jane. — peanutpatty (posted on July 5, 2003)

LVH is sometimes referred to as an enlarged heart. It occurs when the heart
has had to work harder than normal, ie. carrying the load of our excess
weight. Many top notch athletes such as marathon runners have LVH also,
because they have "stressed" their hearts by running long and
hard. If you have no symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest pain,
etc. it is most likely of no consequence at this point. It certainly would
not be a deterrant to surgery cause the wt. loss will improve your heart
condition.
