Question:
Seeking Those Who Found Alternative Payment Options
I too am desperately seeking help. My insurance will not pay for surgery, I make too much money for aid, cannot get disablilty (even though I have de-gererative arthritis in both knees), cannot afford self-pay. I applied for other insurance, and they won't take me because of my weight. I have a great job, but the city I work for doesn't offer insurance as a benefit, and of course no one would accept my application for insurance anyway!!!! What can a person do??? — Carrie M. I know you stated that you can not afford self pay. My surgeon charges
$6900.00 complete.....is there anyway you could barrow that small of an
amount from a family member or a friend. It it would mean going to
Mexico....but right now I believe he is the most affordable surgeon out
there, and he is very good. I hope you find a way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I feel your pain. I have BC/BS of Texas (healthselect) and they have a
written weight loss exclusion clause written directly into their policy.
The only option that I have found is my local Rehabilitation Commission. In
Texas, several people have applied for and got help with the cost of WLS.
Some, I believe have even got the entire cost paid for. I think your income
has very little to do with getting help. It's more about, are you
physically able to hold a job, or does your weight prevent you from working
or impend the performance of your duties to a sufficient degree. Medical
records, Diet history, Dr. recommendations, no congestive heart
failure, uncontrolled diabetes or high blood pressure, or COPD. This is what
Texas requires before they will even speak to you. I go for an appointment
on 7/15. Wish me luck. If this doesn't work I might have to start selling
my plasma.LOL!!!

I went through Texas Rehabilitation Commission. It takes a long time (8
months till approval)but was worth it. Lots of hoops. I had to pay
$2800.00 myself because I was over a certain income.

I have the same problems w/ ins. BC/BS ppo in Il requires 1 year of
dieting-I di everything they asked me to and I have only recieved vague
letters saying they did not see "consistent" evidence of the
dieting. I can't keep doing it if I can't please thyem no matter what I do
so I've been looking for alternatives too. I have found now that the WISH
center has started a financing option and I have an appt to go speak to
them. I will try to remember to return and post what they say. One of my
biggest frusratations is not knowing what the cost IS exactly. I've
seen/heard ranges from $6,500 to $20,000!
