Question:
Cheap, easy protein shake that tastes good, if doctor approves
For those whose doctor approved milk,(and I know some that don't, but mine does) here is what mine suggested. Most of you probably know this, but for those of you that don't: 1 pack sugar free carnation instant breakfast, 1/3 cup powdered non-fat milk, and 1 cup skim milk. Tastes great, 20 grams protein per shake, at 41 cents per shake. — Denise B. (posted on June 21, 2003)

And you're drinking tons of sugar. Why don't you try Champion Whey Stack
or Proscore 100...almost no carbs, sugar and much fewer calories than
carnation & milk, and more protein bang for the buck. These are much
more bioavailable forms of protein for us, and they taste great! There are
many more different types and flavors out there that are so much better in
all respects than CIB...the doctors just have no idea they're out there.
You should visit www.Vitalady.com, and order some samples to taste. She
only carries stuff that's very low sugar, carbs and calories...no
comparison to CIB...frankly, that stuff does nothing for us but beef us up,
and that's not what we're here for!

If the CIB is sugar-free, where is the sugar coming from?

The sugar is lactose, the natural sugar in milk products. Many post-wls
patients tolerate lactose (and the fructose found in fruit) just fine, as
opposed to the sugar found in other products. I think if money is an issue
and you tolerate milk, then this shake is a good option. You don't have to
spend lots of money on designer products to get quality protein.

Denise, don't get confused by another post. This is not a bad choice
because there isn't any added refined sugar in your drink. This drink is
not full of sugar as another poster suggested. The only sugar grams is
from the naturally-occurring lactose in the dairy product. Good luck to
you!

The sugar is from milk. It's job is to fatten up babies. It is also not
the most bioavailable form of protein. The section of intestine where
most of the protein is broken down is bypassed, therefore, we will absorb
all the sugar and little of the protein in milk. If you drink a
predigested protein shake, most of the work has already been sone, so we
better absorb the important protein. If you go to www.Vitalady.com, she
has a great explanation of this.

Oh my...I tried this and was wiped out immediately. The nutritionist
suggested this especially for early post-ops. OMG...I'm telling you that
even though you've never been lactose intolerant before, it can (AND DOES)
happen at any time in your life.
This is something great for those who can handle it, but if you feel wrung
out afterward, BEWARE!!!
