Question:
Has anyone been put on clear liquids for 5 or more days prior to surgery?

I know why the Dr requires this but HOW do you combat hypoglycemia? One time I attempted a 24 hour juice fast by the time I got home from work I was shaking, sweating had a severe headache and came pretty close to passing out.Any tips?    — Lisa F. (posted on June 11, 2003)

Normally, the first 24 hours of a clear liquid diet (Or complete fast) are the worst. You're body will try everything it can to find the energy from some where. You may feel like throwing up, passing out, or other things. However, generally after the first 24-48 hours your body will even out and you probably won't feel anything but the occastional tummy rumble that reminds you that you haven't eaten. I have fasted for religious reasons and when I was a teenager, stopped eating for a good month to try and loose weight (which I did with very bad side effects). Just brave it out. Remember to drink water constantly. Not only will it help with the hunger pains, but also flush out the nasty stuff in your body. Do your best to stick to this diet because your surgeon recommends it. But if for some reason by day 3 you aren't at least feeling semi-normal call him and ask him what to do. But you will be fine. Just takes the body a while to get used to it.
