Has anyone been put on clear liquids for 5 or more days prior to surgery?

I know why the Dr requires this but HOW do you combat hypoglycemia? One time I attempted a 24 hour juice fast by the time I got home from work I was shaking,sweating had a severe headache and came pretty close to passing out.Any tips?
