Question:
Has anyone with federal BCBS been approved for lap RNY with no comorbidities.
I have a BMI of 48 ad weigh in at 280 but have extensive health problems in my family, including heart problems, diabetes, cancer, and lets not forget that my dad and grandmother were also morbidly obese. — Tonya H. (posted on April 13, 2003)

The only way to know for sure is to call your insurance company and ask.
Usually, if they cover it, a BMI of 40+ is more than enough to qualify you.
You usually need to have co-morbids only if your BMI is between 35 and 40.

I have federal BC/BS and had a BMI of 42 and had no problem with approval.
Like the poster below, they would not approve in advance, but my surgeon
said that they would approve after the fact as their criteria was a BMI
over 40. They did within 2 weeks of surgery.

I think the whole pre-approval thing must vary from state to state even
though this is federal BCBS you are talking about because my insurance
company pre-approved me in two days... I was so psyched. I am scheduled
for a Lap RNY on July 22, 2003. So, my answer to your question is yes. I
have Federal BCBS Basic.
Take care and good luck!! Christina
