Question:
Quick Breakfast Ideas Needed with no eggs or most dairy

I am 4 weeks post-op Lap RNY. I tried to go back to work this week and found myself skipping breakfast. I cannot tolerate eggs in any way and do not like cottage cheese, yogurt, or milk. Does anyone have an idea for a quick breakfast that I could eat in my car on the way to work? I can't figure anything out. The typical answers of breakfast tacos, Carnation Instant Breakfast and yogurt aren't helping me at all! HELP! I know it's not good to skip meals.    — Becky P. (posted on April 11, 2003)

I opted for non-traditional breakfast items, since I still can't do eggs at 7 months out. Whatever I COULD eat, I ate for breakfast. That included a handful of well chewed cashews, protein bar - no matter how nasty, it was sustanance and would help keep my metabolism up, Real Meals, soy cheese, crackers. Some of these may be carbs, but I could not eat a lot of proteins at your stage. I have cut back on carbs now. I did not worry about carbs vs. protien early on, just that I was getting in some FOOD. Rice and beans went down well too. Good luck.

I know cheese is dairy but cheese sticks are quick to grab. Meat roll ups are easy to grab from the fridge on the way out the door also. Peanut butter in celery, while higher in calories does have protein. Turkey jerky might work also. I am not overly fond of food first thing in the morning so I drink 1/2 of a Real Meal for 30gms of protein and then mid morning eat another little something at my desk. Good Luck.

What do you eat for your other meals? I am asking because I am not a breakfast food person. I do not eat eggs, sausage, typical breakfast things so I recently started to realize breakfast was just another meal so why not eat regular food? Sometimes I'll eat a beef soft taco, other times I'll have some chicken, sometimes I will eat a half an english muffin with peanut butter on it, or some peanuts, crackers with cheese. I quit thinking about what typical breakfast foods were and just started eating like I do for my other meals. It's helped me tremendously and I quit stressing about what I was going to eat for breakfast because I don't like your typical breakfast items. Just eat!

I have beef jerky for breakfast every day. It is quick, portable and full or protein.

I am with some of the other posters, breakfast is just another meal so I eat whatever sounds good that day. If I want to have leftovers from the night before, that is what I have. I can not tolerate eggs very well and dairy and I are not gettin along either. You never know what I am going to have for breakfast. Yesterday I had leftover spaghetti :) hehe

I like to have a Banana or a Slice of Cheese or hand-full of peanuts for breakfast. Rarely can I finish an entire banana, but they're quick & easy. I look for things to give me just the right amount of food to get me going in the mornings. And I'm always running late, so these things are easy to grab-n-go!

I am another of the "breakfast is just another meal" crowd. I really like the imitation crabmeat and will grab some of that in the morning. Lots of protein, convenient...just toss 2-3 pieces in a sandwich bag and eat it on the way to work...JR

Either mix up a protein shake and pop it into the freezer for 15 minutes before you run out the door or try some protein bars. Another good protein breakfast (it has some carbs) is Kashi Good Friends or Kashi Go Lean cereal. Eat it right out of the box.

I also just grab whatever hits my fancy that day. Many times it shredded BBQ turkey or Manwhich with a slice of cheese melted on it. I actually put it on a small paper plate then cover with another one and tape in 4 locations on the sides. Then when I get to work I nuke it and eat. Tastes great and good protein. String chees sticks is always my fail safe. I buy the individually wrapped 24 pakcs and have one pack at work and one at home. Heat up some slices of ham and melt cheese on it then roll it up. Easy to eat that way.

Have you tried protein bars yet? I personally cannot stand the taste of most of them but I found Detour bars which are absolutely fantastic. They have 30 grams of protein for each bar (try eating half for breakfast and save the other half for later or the next day). They taste very much like Snickers and you can get them at GNC or Vitamin Shoppe. They'll be coming out with U-Turn bars soon which are more like Milky Ways. And I like the string cheese too.

I eat a Sportcookie on the way every morning. 15g of protein, kind of "muffin-like".

I ALWAYS start my day with protein shake (real protein, not CIB, made with water, no sugar for me). But I need something solid, too. And yes, I eat in the car. Lots. I walk out the door with a shake, and eat things like, a few apple slices OR some carrots (I don't know why, I just like carrots right now) OR even PB sandwich (half). Since I have 30g protein when I first wake up, and another 30g when I leave (about a 2 hr lapse), I've already got 60g under my belt, so EATING it is rarely of any interest to me.

I ditto what Michelle Curran "Vitalady" does. Some folks recommend Keto hot cereals, which come in two flavors. I haven't tried them yet, but hope to.

I take a protein drink (30 grams of protein) with me as well. I drink it in the car and then when I get to where I am going (usually about an hour after finishing my drink) I usually have some crackers and applesauce to fill me up for the morning. I bought those teeny glad containers - the smallest ones they make and just throw some crackers in there and take one of those small containers of applesauce. Just enough to fill me up until noon.

I make a little bit of cream of wheat with splenda and a splash of Continent 8 Vanilla Soy Milk (just for the taste). Or if your not in the mood for a hot breakfast, maybe a bit of applesauce with some cinnamon (not cinnamon sugar), nutmeg, and or vanilla extract if you can tolerate the taste of either.
