Question:
Has anyone dealt with Aetna's new requirements posted on 1/17/03??? HELP!!
Aetna's new requirement is complex, but includes 6 months of nutritional counseling that is physician supervised, and is in conjunction with low cal diet, exercise, and program of behavioral modification. A summary letter from the physician is not satisfactory. PLEASE HELP!!! — Susan B. (posted on January 30, 2003)

I have Aetna and I understand your concern. Here is what I did after I read
the coverage bulletin. I contacted Aetna by email (my coverage started with
them on Jan 1st) and I outlined what I have done with my PCP for the past
two years, which is: Diagnosed with diabetes in Feb 2000, he put me on the
"diabetes eating plan", I met with a nutritionist 4-5 times,
joined a gym and saw my doctor every 3-5 months for follow up. I initally
lost 30 pounds and that was it. The answer I got back from Aetna was
"this should be sufficient". They also suggested that I have my
PCP submit a letter for pre-approval. I am taking them at their word (I
also kept the email reply, I'm no dummy) and when I see my doctor later
this month I am going to have him start the ball rolling. I can't get into
the informational session with my surgeon until March 17th, but I want to
do as much as I can before then. I hope this helps.
