Question:
I am trying to remember to eat more fruits and veggies everyday but the carbs...
are sooooooooooo high! One banana is like 28 carbs! Apples are just as bad too. I am wondering if these are concidered OK carbs to have. I dont want to intake to many carbs. What do you think? I am a very picky eater and only like certin fruits and veggies...any suggestions? — sandrac131 (posted on January 6, 2003)

Two things to keep in mind. First of all, your body NEEDS protein, carbs
and fat to function properly. You do need some carbs. The second thing to
remember is that a serving of cooked/canned fruits or vegetables is usually
just half a cup. For fresh fruits you probably only need to eat a small
portion, half of a banana or small apple, for example.

Sandra, there are good carbs and bad carbs. The good carbs, called complex
carbs are those you get from fruits and vegetables, to include things like
beans and popcorn. The bad carbs, called simple carbs, are the "white
carbs" that you need to either eliminate or minimize, like white
breads, cookies, cakes, donuts, white rice, pasta. While small amounts of
rice and pasta are OK, too much will convert to sugar in your body. My
nutritionist said that we have to achieve a balance in our diet-mostly
protein, some carbs, fruits and veggies, and some fats.

Fruit is what I use to replace other sweets. I dump on bananas and
oranges, apple peelings hurt, so I enjoy melons and grapefruits. I very
well with most berries and love mangos. As for vegetables, I can't eat
brocoli or turnip and collard greens without getting severely painful gas.
I stick with green beans, asparagus and english peas(in moderation). I also
tolerate carrots and celery(cooked or raw). Hope this helps.

I eat a lot of fruits and veggies. Bananas in moderation (maybe 1/2 of a
medium one), same with citrus and sweet apples. I love granny smith - a
bit tart and crisp and I peel the skin first. I love tomatoes (and now I
can eat the skin), green peppers, cucumbers (deseeded for less gas issues),
broccoli, cauliflower, all berries (which are low carb fruits - low sugar),
same with melons - a good low-sugar fruit choice. I eat very limited
quantities of pineapple, peaches and pears...lots of sugar but soo good
:>) Oh and I LOVE salads!
