You may be rushing things a bit. At 1 week post op, I was still on
liquids. I could eat small curd cottage cheese, but I didn't progress to
soft foods until about 3 weeks post-op. Deli meats didn't come along
until until about 4-5 weeks post-op. Check with your surgeon though--they
always should be able to advise you as to the best time to start classes of
foods. I got a list of acceptable foods every 2 weeks to add as I
progressed along.

I was eating the same type food as you at 1 week post op open RNY in
October 2000. As long as you're following you're surgeon's program and
feeling fine I'd say you're o.k. Just don't get too adventuresome until a
few more weeks pass. Best wishes!

Erin, I think you are rushing a bit! What did your surgeon &
nutrionist say about your pos-op diet...I'm not an advocate of a
post-liquid diet, however, I would eat pureed or soft food for the first
2-3 wks....Don't worry right now about your protein, just worry about not
getting dehyrdated and getting in enough liquids. Your NEW stomach is
still swollen probably, be careful & good Luck!

I would worry about the nuts maybe tearing your staple line. At one wk out
everything is still very tender and I wouldn't risk something like that.

Erinn - what did your doctor tell you to eat? That is what you should be
doing. Doctors have various methods of working this and you should do what
you are instructed to do. I am also 1 week out Per my doctor I was on
liquids till last wednesday and started solids on Wednesday. I had bacon
and egg for breakfast, tuna salad for lunch and dinner. Today I had
sausage and egg for breakfast. Meat was turkey for fat purposes though.
This is how I was instructed. I am to limit intake to 1/2 oz. Please stay
with the method your doctor recommends.

Erin, please give your new tummy a chance to heal some before you start
pushing the envelope. Your new tummy is still swollen inside and thats why
the surgeons limit your intake to liquids for a week or two, then gradually
increase it to soft foods. Nuts should definitely not be included this
early, nor deli meats and cheese. What does your doctor say? I get the
feeling that the doc has not approved your new menu. Don't rush it-you'll
be able to have all that and much more before you know it.

Call your doctor! Most surgeons work with or have a staff nutritionist. I
am 4 days until surgery. My surgeon has his patients on a strict regimen
for the first six weeks. The first 4 weeks include only a protein shake
several times a day, clear liquids, jell-o and supplements. Part of the
reason for this is to aid the healing process, and part is to jump start
the weight loss, and the third is to transition you to a different way of
thinking about your weight and the capacity of your pouch. After this
stage, his patients meet with his nutritionist, and transition to smooth
and pureed food. By this time most of the healing has occurred. After two
weeks of this, you begin solid foods. Remember why you had this surgery.
It is a tool to help you change your eating habits. In the begining, not
only are you healing, but you must become acutely aware of what you are
eating. BTW, this surgeon has been doing this for 15 years, and this
routine has evolved over time to be a key to his patients success. Good
Luck.

Take it slower. I ate almonds and had the sickest day of my life 3-weeks
post-op; vomited 14 hours every 20 minutes. See my profile on what to do
should you get sick.

Aloha!!! Keep in mind that every surgeon's post op diet is vastly
different. In my case, we are encouraged to eat as many textured foods as
possible as soon as possible. I even had roast beef and brocolli in the
hospital!! Take it at your own pace. If you can't tolerate something, go
back to the basics...and then try the "harsh" food at a later
time. In my particular case, I was able to eat lobster, shrimp, pork
tenderloin immediately coming home from the hospital.. BUT I could not nor
can I still eat EGGS!! I throw up on them immediately. Everyone is
different. At any rate, I have had a varied diet from the beginning. No
pureed or liquid...but my goal is to eat healthy. I have had good luck so
far. I have lost 85 pounds in 3 months. (Open RNY on August 7th). Keep
remembering that the food thing is definitely a trial and error situation.
What works for one individual does not for another. Follow your instincts
and your heart. Educate yourself on what you KNOW you are supposed to be
eating and go with it. Hang in there!! You are fine!!!! Hugs, Kathie (in
Hawaii)................

I had ham and gr beans my third day after surgery. Now I was a little
different. My first surgery was June of 2001. But the surgeon screwed me up
and I had the surgery but they could not attach the intestine yet. Had it
gone ok, he starts his patients on real food within a week. However I went
15mths with no food or drink. Had to be on nutrition thru IV entire time.
Finally this past August 19th, 2002 my new surgeon went in and repaired all
my damage and attached my intestine to my new stomach pouch. I was finally
a true bypass patient. And three days later still in the hosp I was eating
ham and gr beens and ice cream with no trouble. Just couldnt eat very much
of it. Different surgeons have their own ideas for post op diet. Some
surgeons keep patients on liquids for a mth. I dont think I could have
stood that. I couldnt stand it the second day out.
