Question:
Dry Hair Relief???
I am 5 weeks post-op and am having an AWFUL time with my hair being dry and brittle. I read that this symptom is typical of malnutrition or improper diet. I know that I am eating little to no fats and feel I can contribute this symptom to that fact. I am doing water aerobics twice a week, but am extra careful not to get my hair wet in the pool. I have returned to salon tanning, but wrap my hair in a towel. I find it necessary to sleep with conditioner on my hair every other day in order to keep it managable and am only washing my hair every other day. Can anyone recommend a shampoo or a conditioner that will help with this? What about an oral supplement?? Thanks in advance for any replies. — Sue H. (posted on July 1, 2002)

The best way to give your hair a lift before of after surgery is with a
mixture of mayonaise, eggs and beer. Apply to hair, wrap with a hot towel
and let sit. It will really condition your hair plus add some protein to
it

Dry, brittle hair, does it also seem to be coming out more? This could be
a sign of a thyroid problem, you might want to have blood work done to
check your thyroid levels. Hope this is not the case, Jo-Dee

WOW! Can I relate. I had this same problem. I've never had a problem
with dry hair or skin before, but at 1 month post op I had dry, bittle
hair, dandruff, and flaking skin. I started using a shampoo system caled
Nutri-Ox from Sally's Beauty supply and added a flax seed oil supplement
from my health food store about a month ago and the problem is GONE! The
Nutri-ox has also slowed my hair loss to a more manageable rate. For a
while I thought I was going to go bald. Talk to your nutritionist about
adding supplements to help with your problem. Best of luck - - -

I have always had beautiful healthy thick hair, no matter what horrible
things I did to it. I was horrified after my surgery to see what it had
done to my hair. Half of it is gone, what is left is dry and frizzy and
getting some curl (whatever that is about). Anyhow, I tried shampoo after
shampoo and so many different conditioners that it was nuts. Finally I
found this stuff at wal-mart of all places called Friz-ease or something
like that. It is like and oil that you put on after conditioning. Its
like 5 or 6 dollars and wonderful. It doesnt really cure the problem, but
it makes it look like you did. When I use it, my hair looks normal again.
Yipee!! Try it and see if you like it.

I had this problem after my hair started growing back. I was so glad not to
be losing it anymore but all of a sudden I had this haystack on my head and
I couldn't do a thing with it! LOL I tried several products and finally
found Pantene ProV creme in a little short container. I use the one for
color treated hair. :) It worked WONDERS! With the very first time I used
it my hair behaved (well, as good as it did before, anyway =). I also use a
leave-in conditioner cuz I have dry/curly hair.

I have thick, curly hair so have always struggled with dryness. I take
flax oil every day and it works miracles. If you can take pills, you can
get the capsules at most drug store. If not, you can buy the liquid at
health food stores. You have to take it for about a month before you see
any results so hang in there. You will also notice that you don't need as
much lotion and face cream because your skin will be so much healthier.
Good luck.
