Question:
would it be better to get a banded type WLS if you have hep-C??
I have hep-C and keep getting denied WLS from all the surgeons in my area. They keep saying it is too risky. I was wondering if maybe it would be better to have a banded type surgery as opposed to the rny. would that be any safer? any comments?? — rvf263 (posted on May 29, 2002)

I test positive for the Hep. C virus as well - I'm 7 weeks and 1-day out
from my Lap. RNY and I'm about 45+ pounds down so far...I don't know what
they believe the risk to be. I mean, is your Hep. C active? They didn't
know at the time of my surgery if mine had gone active or remained inactive
as it had tested some ten years ago. My surgeon actually did a liver
biopsy while handling the lap. procedure and I was thankful for that -
those biopsy's hurt if done the other way. Want my doc's name? You can
travel to Oregon and have it done...he's incredibly good at his work and I
love him dearly for saving my life. Getting the weight down/off will only
help you with the Hep. C so I guess thats why I have so much confusion with
the docs you've consulted with saying it's risky. If ever there comes a
time that we need a liver transplant due to the Hep. C - we wouldn't even
be considered as a top candidate and eligible for it if our weight is so
high - it's too much of a risk and they'd give it to a 'healthier' person
first - one that would be more able to accept it. Give me an email jingle
if you want to visit more...good luck in your quest.
