Question:
What types of food cause dumping?
I understand that pure refined sugar will cause dumping with the rny. What other foods will cause dumping? How do carbs affect you...bread, pasta rice? How about things like sugar free pudding? I am waiting on approval from my ins company and have chosen to have the rny. But I have many..many questions...even after my counsultation. — Laura T. (posted on May 9, 2002)

Sugar is the only thing that causes actual dumping. Sugar substitute might
also do the trick. However, you can get sick from anything you eat.
Especially if eaten too fast or not chewed well.

Sugar is all that bothers me. But I have a couple of friends who are
bothered by fats. Not diarrhea, but true dumping. BUT twice recently I've
dumped on part of a burger. And THAT is strange since I've eaten them
since year 2. ???? I do not do milk because of the high sugar in it. Read
the label. So, the pudding MIX might be sugar free, but when you add milk,
it is no longer. Some do not tolerate milk because it no longer passes thru
the enzyme bath to break it down. Some dump, some get such horrible gas
& diarrhea that it is unbearable. I avoid it because I believe it will
put the wt back on me.

As you will soon discover, everyone is so different. I am almost 20 months
post op and I have never dumped. I don't have a clue what it even is. I
had a distal, open, RNY and I can eat small amounts of absolutely anything.
A few of my friends have had the surgery since me and they don't dump
either. Please let me know if I can help in any way.
