Question:
Diet coke lovers!
I love diet coke and I am 8 weeks post op from open ryn. My doctor has said no diet cokes for another 3 months. I was wanting to hear from others about what their doctor has said about this and hear from those that are drinking diet coke (with the fizz - not flat) and if they have had any problems, when they started drinking them, etc. Thank you — Tammy M. I personally am addicted to diet pepsi. My doctor told me no carbonation
for the first 2 months and then I could introduce it slowly. So by 3
months out, I was drinking them like crazy again with no problems.
However, at 9 months out I have really slowed down in losing weight. I
have been researching the cause for a long time and some people suggested
that diet sodas cause carb cravings and incidentally slow weight loss. And
some people say that the carbonation stretches your pouch. There are a
million conflicting stories. So I personally recently have decided to stop
drinking diet pepsi at least until I am closer to goal weight. It's going
to be tough but I figure that I only get an opportunity to lose weight like
this once in a lifetime and I dont want to screw it up. Who knows what's
true and whats not, but why take the chance. Anyway, sorry I wrote so
much, just wanted to let you know there are some other things to think
about.

I LOVE diet coke!! Always have. I was good in not drinking them the first
6 weeks and then I couldn't drink anymore milk (I could smell sour milk
from every pore in my body!!) and everything else was too sweet (crystal
light, etc.). I've NEVER been a water drinker. To me, it just tastes bad,
whether it's bottled or from the tap. I only drink decaf diet coke but
that's the only thing I've been drinking now for 3 1/2 months. It hasn't
slowed my weight loss either. I'm about 20 pounds from my goal and I'm 5
1/2 months post op.

I got over my "addiction" to Diet Coke about 11 yrs ago when it
simply didn't taste good after another surgery I had. I gradually
reintroduced it to my diet in moderation. I had WLS this past Dec. My
doctor is a "no carbonation" doc but occasionally I just crave
one. I have drank a whole can, fizz and all with no problem, sometimes a
few sips and I just don't desire anymore. I have heard that the bicarbonate
of soda causes us to loose calcium from our bones which can contribute to
osteoporosis (even if the drink has gone "flat" it still has this
ingredient in it) so that is another reason perhaps to either stay away
from carbonation or really exercise moderation. Some people say it gives
them an "uncomfortable" full feeling but I have not personally
experienced that, however I don't dump either and tolerate all foods.

As much as I loved Coke before surgery (loved the carbonation burn of any
soda! Diet or not), BUT by the TIME I was able to drink/eat/experiment- my
taste buds had changed and nothing tasted right. To this day, I will crave
a soda, pop one, drink 2 sips and say "why did I get this?"...
where's my water? Where's my Crystal Light?

I am 12 weeks post op and a die hard diet coke fan. I stopped 1 weeks
before surgery (didn't want the withdrawl headach in the hospital). After
surgery I would dream about diet coke. I knew going into this surgery that
my dr. said NEVER again could we have carbonated drinks if I was serious
about keeping the weight off. I figure that I went thru all of this with
one goal in mind, so no carbonation for me! Best of luck.

Like a couple of your other posters, my taste buds also changed. I really
did not think I would be able to make it without a diet coke, or two, or
three, a day, lol! I stayed off them for a couple of months post-op, like
a good WLS patient, but when I felt I could handle them again they tasted
awful (I had been dying for one)! ALL carbonated drinks taste awful to me!
Now when I grab a drink at the store I grab water or a V8, at home I drink
CL or regular tea w/S&L. You may be surprised to find your taste buds
have done the same!

I've been told no carbonation too, so I've just made my peace with it.
When I was drinking carbonated sodas as a pre-op I had gas (really bad!)
all the time and now I rarely have gas (unless I eat something gassy). I
like that! I used to be paranoid all the time that if I bent over or moved
in just the right way I'd embarrass myself - now I never even think about
it. :)

i was addicted to diet coke and diet dr, pepper, i really paniced when i
was told don't drink any for months, i had drank some kind of colas for 45
years,, i had an open r.n.y. now 6 months out, well when i could drink it,
i didn't want it!! i drink bottled water, i crave it, and before the
surgery i didn't drink a glass of water in a year! so tastes do change,,i
feel i don't need the caffine, so water is fine,, never would have thought
it could happen,, p.s. i've lost 140 pounds!! this is great!!

Hi, I was the ultimate diet coke addict. I never drank water and was
drinking 6-10 cans of diet coke a day!! They told me that we are not
supposed to have anything with carbonation in it for 6 months after
surgery. I weaned myself off the pop about 2 days before the surgery
because of fear of caffiene withdrawel. My surgery was January 7th, 2002
and except for one sip about a week ago (tasted awful) I have not drank it
and do not miss it. I figure if I had spent all that time and effort to
not drink it and have gone so long without, why bring it back and
reintroduce a bad habit. I am trying to wean my husband off of it and get
him to drink just water also. I love my water now. It however, must be
cold or I can't drink it. Good luck. Liz
