Question:
Is 3 wks post-op too soon to drink a beer with tomato juice?

I am not an alcoholic by any means but occasinally will have a red beer. We have company coming this weekend and we are planning to go out. If I can't have a beer is there anything else that I can drink besides water? Thanks. Also, I got something stuck today, I finally threw it up to get it out but is there anything you can do it help it thru if it happens again??    — Danielle P. (posted on February 14, 2002)

Are you nuts or what. You aren't sappose to have alchol for a year post op. And then only on special ocasions.

stay away from anything carbonated. It stresses out your pouch and you'll end up gaining weight. Don't get into bad habits this early or you may end up having some problems. Leave the beer alone and just have the tomato juice along with a water if you don't want to have water alone.

oops, I meant it "stretches" out your pouch (and probably stresses it too!) smile

I'd say that 3 weeks is way too soon! What's wrong with offering to be the designated driver and having plain tomato juice? Is there such a thing as a virgin bloody mary?

You might want to check with your doctor first and find out what his protocol is, but I know that my surgeon does not allow alcohol for the first year post-op. There are a couple of good reasons to stay away from alcohol for this amount of time. First, your body will react quicker to a smaller amount of alcohol and you as yet you don't know how that will feel. Next, if you had the RNY, alcohol is high in sugar and you may find that you will dump with this (someone with an RNY may be able to shed some light on this better than I). And finally, your liver is working real hard now while you are loosing weight. Alcohol consumption will put unneeded stress on this organ. More importwant than any of our advice is to do what your own physician allows. You trusted him with your life for surgery, why stop now?

I had some meat stuck a few weeks after surgery and my doctor had me drink warm water with meat tenderizer in it(MSG Free) about a teaspoon in 5 oz of warm water...drink slowly so it can "drizzle" down the pouch. It tastes like salt water..but worked...I had to do it again just yesterday. It dissolves the meat in the pouch...I do not know if it will work on other things...Hope it helps

Alcohol too early can cause the pouch to bleed. Check w/your doc.

I almost had to agree with the anonymous poster and thought the better of it because I thought that was alittle extreme but, you really need to rethink "why" you had this surgery. If you are willing to drink alcohol after 3 weeks, then what will happen a year from now? Did you go through all of this pain and anguish to fail? I doubt it. Alcohol (one drink) at 3 weeks, will most likely make you very very drunk. Besides that, as one poster said, your body is already working overtime healing from the surgery. You don't need to add to the body's stress. If you "must have a "red beer" why not use O'Doul's? It's non alcoholic beer. Just remember all of the sugar you will be consuming in that one drink. You may pay for it later.

Going Anon to avoid flames, but I had a dry white wine early on. ONE glass, sipped slowly and had no troubles. I certainly believe in moderation and don't think one drink will hurt. If you don't react well to the first few sips of whatever you choose, stop drinking.

I dont know where the anonymous poster had the gaul to ask if you are crazyh. My surgeon's instructions were no alcoholic beverages for two weeks! I thought that was a bit much but those were the instructions. What I like the best was the part of only after a year and special occasions.. LOL For the pouch knows when the occasion is worthy of an alcoholic beverage. I would ask your doctor for his protocol. I drank socially after 6 months and my sister at about three. And to the anon posters, please limit your name calling; and don't ask people if they are crazy... ~JEANNE (not anonymous or embarassed)

Like most food choices, I do believe it is a trial and error with most. At 3 weeks, I was more concerned about surviving the day to day eating/water challenge, not to mention I was still probably on soft foods....than to think about heading out socially. I think I tried visiting the fair, but it was hard, and I fatigued easily. But that was me- perhaps you are progressing faster that some of us? I had no desire to even go out until about 4 mos. out, and I don't think I had a drink until 5 or 6 mos.... and now since I had my Gallbladder out (a year after surgery)- my drinking has been cut in half. I think that my choice of drinks made the Gallbladder work overtime, and therefore had to be removed.

I understand from one of these sites that it is unadvisable to drink any achohol for 6 mos. until your stomach completly heals. An idea for you is O'Douls. I almost ordered it myself the other night, it tastes just like beer and most restarants have it. By the way, I love red beer too.I wish you the best.
