Question:
Is there a connection between lack of Protein and Colds?
I been slacking off on my protein for the past two months or so. I just can't seem to get over the gross-factor. The shakes all seem to be overly sweet and slimy. I'm trying real hard to keep up with the protein but I find that I'm "forgetting" to take my protein shake. Anyway, I just came down with a terrible cold and was wondering if I became more suseptible because my lack of enough protein in my diet. I had distal rny and was told to try to get in 120 grams of protein per day. I don't have any appetite with this cold and am avoiding those gross shakes but will this inadequate protein intake prolong my cold? — lalasmommy (posted on December 16, 2001)

It's not that direct, like vitamin C. When you don't get enough protein in,
your body cannibalizes something else. Even WITH plenty of protein on
board, we have a slightly compromised, immune system. So, when you jerk
the rug out from under it, you have undermined your entire immune system.
In essence, it has the same net result as if you had had NO nourishment for
those 2 months. Once the protein & albumin levels fall low enough, you
may have trouble absorbing nutrients in any form orally. You might want to
check out some other brands of protein and see if you can pick up the
levels very slowly now.

I hate the shakes too. You can mix protein powder in Cool Whip, its yummy.
I TRY to eat meats and cheeses and solid foods at my surgeons advice,
devilled eggs are good too, and yogurt. Perhaps you should get bloodwork?
To see whats up?
