Question:
Do insurance companies consider your heredity when deciding on approval?
Both my parents have strong histories of heart disease in their families. And my father, as well as his father is a diabetic. While my BMI is 42, I don't currently have any comorbid conditions. But I feel like a time bomb is ticking in my future if I don't get the weight off. — Joanne B. (posted on November 2, 2001)

I don't know about if they actually considered it, but I sent in a strong
family medical history along with my own.
Is there NOTHING you can use as a comorbidty??? Also a strong diet history
would be good. Go back as far as you can. Good Luck!

My high BMI, and my family history is what got me approved through
PacifiCare. My father had his first heart attack at 36, I'm 28. It was
just a matter of time before it was my turn. So yes , I'm pretty sure they
take your family health history into consideration.

The wouldn't consider that as a primrary reason for the surgery.
Your Bmi barely makes it; so, you'd absolutely have to have some
comorbidities. Family history and a 42bmi probably won't make the
cut. I'm actually wondering why you would opt for a drastic wls
in your case. Weight is only one factor in heart disease and diabetes.

Some companies will consider it and some won't... I decided to use a
family history and they wanted doctor's statement of proof and death
certificates... I was lucky enough to get around having to do that, so be
careful what you ask for. A lot of insurance companies will approve you
for your BMI since it is over 40.. A strong diet history of supervised or
unsupervised attempts is recommended .. I would get your PCP to write a
strong letter of recommendation though, and for most PCP's if you write the
letter they consider typing it out and signing it. Good luck in your
journey!
