Question:
Does anyone know about a Private Policy that covers WLS
I have been denied coverage for WLS by Kaiser and I had been represented by Walter. It is exluded from my policy in large highlighted language. What I am trying to find is a Ins Co that covers WLS that I can get a policy on my own. I live in Oregon and if anyone knows of such a policy, I would be forever greatful. I originally had Kaiser HMO. I waited a year until I could switch insurance
companies during the open enrollement period at my company. During open
enrollment, I switched to Great West PPO and checked the benefit book to
make sure the policy my company bought did not have any exclusions. I had
no exclusions, but medical necessity was required. My new insurance kicked
in September 1st, 2001, I had a initial consult on 09/13 which I missed due
to the tragedy that happened 9/11 which meant I was unable to fly out of
Denver. I rescheduled my appointment for 10/04, my LOMN was sent on 10/08
and I was approved on 10/09 for the BPD/DS. My surgery date is scheduled
for 11/08 with Dr Keshishian in Delano, CA. If I had stayed with Kaiser
HMO in Colorado, I would have had to join their weight management program
for a year before I could even apply (which they also stated had an average
weight loss of 30 lbs after a year), then I would only be eligible for an
open proximal RNY and they only did a certain number a year, plus you had
to be approved by a committee, etc. Waiting a year and switching insurance
companies was the best thing I ever did as I am now able to get my
insurance to pay for a surgery that will allow me to maintain greater
average long term weight loss and have a normally functioning, though
smaller stomach, etc.
Good luck!
