Question:
How do you get in enough water?
Well, I am not post-op yet, but surgeron told me to practice getting in 64 oz of water a day....UHHH...It is hard..I am currently trying to lose up to 30 pounds before she will do it...I am on a all liquid protein diet...Mixing about 1 scoop of protein to about 10-16 oz of water and I do that 4 times a day...My question is does that count as part of my water intake??? I also drink about 20 oz. of either Diet Snapple or Sobe Lean does that count??? Thanks for any info.. — Dusty S. (posted on September 28, 2001)

Hey Dusty. Some will tell you that the protein counts, some will tell you
it doesn't. Anyway, I don't count my protein in my water intake. Why do
you mix your protein with so much water? Does it taste ok that way? I mix
my problend 55 Mocha Cappucino with 5 oz of water and 3 crushed ice cubes
and am getting 27 g per serving (I do 2-3 drinks a day). Then I follow it
up with 48-64 oz of water. Yes the diet Snapple counts. So does the Sobe
if it is sugar free. From what I've read, an increased amount of protein
can be hard on your organs and should be followed up with water. Anyway,
start first thing in the morning with your protein and water. It is always
easy for me to get my water in if it is earlier in the day. Lastly, do a
search on the internet for a product called Cher-Amino. It is protein that
can be taken in tablespoon form (I hear it tastes like cough syrup but is
easiest if taken right before brushing your teeth in the morning). That
might help you. Good luck and God Bless!

Try to remember that everything will taste differently to you after
surgery. I LOVED my diet dr pepper, but after surgery I can't stand the
taste of diet pop because all I taste is the nutrasweet. Water is actually
what I want now...it's like anything else...after you drink it for a while,
it will be all you want to drink.

Prior to my rny, I really didn't drink much water. I was a diet
coke drinker. I had to train myself to drink water. If you just
keep a cold bottle of water with you and sip on it all day, you
actually develop a dependence on it. I never go anywhere without
my bottle of water. If you really can't stand the stuff, you can
always use Crystal Light. The water you use for your protein drink
does not count toward your 640z. Decaf tea and decaf coffee do count
and only half of the regular coffe and regular tea counts as a water.

The group that I went through considers any liquid that is not caffeinated
to be a part of your liquid requirement. (Too bad . . . I could add another
12 oz to my daily liquid from coffee :) That said, if you're on a liquid
diet, you may want to make sure that you are getting enough clear water in
addition to your protein drinks. Just plain old water does wonders for ya!
