Question:
My cousin had surgery weeks ago but suffered a leak complication.
After being in the hospital for weeks the doctor has sent her home. She is still on IV medications and is receiving tube feedings. The question is the doctor told her it will take time for the leak to heal up. Can this be right? They went in and did performed some surgical procedure after the initial surgery. Why wouldn't they close up this leak? Has anyone ever heard of leaving a leak to close itself? Please e-mail me at [email protected] — Barbara H. (posted on May 21, 2002)

Yes, absolutely. A small leak can close on it's own. I had a small leak
from my new pouch into the area behind my diaphragm. It took a good 16 days
without any food or fluid going into my mouth (was fed interveniosly(sp)
the scar tissue built up and snuffed out the leak. It was a NASTY
expirience but 10 month later and 110 less of me...I'm over it. If she
wants anyone to talk to that's been through it...send me an e-mail. I think
the depression and fear from feeling like the "only one" (I was
of the half dozen or so women I personally knew who went through RNY) were
worse than any pain I felt through the whole thing. Hope this helps. -Kim
