Question:
What is the best thing to do to help prevent or lessen hair loss after surgery?
I haven't had surgery yet, but I hear that from about the 3rd-8th month you tend to lose hair. My hair isn't that thick to begin with. Are there any shampoos or vitamins that you recommend to help with the regrowth or to help prevent it? — Susan H. (posted on April 30, 2002)

To help lessen the hair lose that you may encounter, most physicians
recommend that you eat more protein and that you make sure that you are
taking your vitamins.

I also am pre-op and have been asking about hair loss prevention. I was
advised to take Zinc and Biotin. Also there is a shampoo and conditioner
called Nioxin. Clarol has one called 5X or something like that. I was also
told to take Nature Beauty Viamins for the Hair. I intend to try all. The
shampoo and conditioner I will start as soon as I get to the store. I
expect surgery in about one month so I am going to start preparing the hair
NOW. Good luck.

Maybe we are all different, but I was consuming up to 100 grams of protein
when my hair started falling out (still do). It continued no matter what I
tried. I am nearing month 6 and it is slowing down to very little loss
now. My hair was very thin and is very fine to begin with so I was really
worried about this. And the rate that it started falling out, I worried
that I would end up bald. I think I am at the end of the hair loss phase
now (it started exactly at 3 months), and nobody could tell but me. So I
quit stressing about it and experimented with some new styles. My hair is
super-short now, shorter than my latest pic, and really highlighted. I
love it and may plan on keeping it this short, I'm getting lots of
compliments on it, so who knows. I'm just happy that it wasn't as bad as I
had imagined it would be.
