What is the best thing to do to help prevent or lessen hair loss after surgery?

I haven't had surgery yet, but I hear that from about the 3rd-8th month you tend to lose hair. My hair isn't that thick to begin with. Are there any shampoos or vitamins that you recommend to help with the regrowth or to help prevent it?
