Question:
After waiting for months for my appt next week, I no longer have the 40 BMI. HELP!

I have had my appointment scheduled for next Wednesday with my surgeon for months. I recently got over a stomach virus & when I got on the scales today, it showed that my weight is 226. I am 5'4. When I made my appoinment months ago, I was 235. Now I am scared that the surgeon will not think that I qualify for the surgery. The only co-mords that I have are low back pain, joint pain & GERD. What should I do?    — Lori M. (posted on August 23, 2001)

Lori, It was sugested to me to use the rolls of nickels in your pockets or your bra. It's only a few pounds, you only need to weigh 233, weigh some rolls. Good Luck

I would not advocate doing anything misleading! Your Doctor knows your history and the battles you have with your weight. If I were you I would not weigh anything, but clothes and body weight! Good Luck

I would use it to your advantage. Keep trying maybe you can lose more weight. Perhaps you could make it to your goal without surgery.

Eat, drink milk shakes, don't exercise - get up at night an eat, order in a pizza or two. Wear heavy shoes and clothes for weighing -- my surgeon NEVER had me remove clothing or shoes for weighing.

My doctor didn't weigh me at my initial consultation. Is that weird? He took my word for my height and weight and that's what went to the insurance company. Besides if you're close, and you tell the surgeon that you've been practicing good habits in preparation for the surgery, he/she will probably not be worried about a few pounds, as long as your bmi is over 35.

Wear heels to the apointment and slip them off when you get measured, bare feet is shorter than any shoes. Slouch a bit when you height is measured too. Rolls of coins helps.

That is the answer... you dont need to weigh more... you just need to be shorter. Check it out on the BMI calculator... type in your height at 1/2 inch shorter and see how it all changes! Of course you may have already given them your height when you made the appointment for the consultation.

What is wrong with all of you that have provided answers? She should be happy that she lost the weight and keep trying to lose more. Putting rolls of quarters in your pockets - that is dishonest. This surgery is very serious. I would explain about being ill. Your doctor will understand and take your dieting history into consideration.

My doctor asked me for my heighth. I subtracted one inch when I gave it to him, because I was afraid of missing the 40 mark also. I wasn't worried about the surgeon approving me, I was worried about the insurance company! They will not approve anyone under 40 BMI without co-morbidities. Personally, if putting quarters in my bra would get me over the 40 BMI, I would do it. Turns out that all I needed was to be "one inch shorter". I would do it again in a second.
