Question:
What is up with Roseanne?
I know that Roseanne Barr had a Fobi pouch a while back and was doing quite well. However, I just saw a recent photograph of her and it looks like she has gained back quite a bit of her weight. I was saddened to see this. Has anyone heard any comments by her? It hasn't been all that long since she had her surgery! — Peggy G. (posted on October 11, 2000)

It has been a while since her surgery, but the reason she's gained back is
because she grazes. She does this quite openly on her television show -
and she obviously didn't get the "dumping" syndrome with sweets
because she indulges in chocolates and other yummies. We cannot do this
and expect to reach our goals.

I always hated seeing Roseanne eating her Godiva chocolates on her
ridiculous talk show. It was like she was making a mockery of WLS in my
opinion. I really feel strongly that her eating chocolate every day on the
show was giving a very poor picture of WLS and the aftermath of it. I'm not
surprised she has regained weight. The fact is, dumping or not, we cannot
continue to eat the way she was and keep our weight off.

I agree with Cindy & Denise..Roseanne was her OWN WORST enemy.. She
grazed all the time, ate all the wrong things, obviously she did not
take to heart the lessons you learn early post-op on how and what to eat..
No WLS surgery is fail proof if you allow it to fail.. WLS is only a
tool.. WE ARE the mechanics.. People like her make WLS look bad.. (sigh)
Follow your surgeons diet plan protocol and you will be fine..

Its her own fault if she gained back all the weight. The last show I saw
all she did was eat candy the entire show The only thing I can figure is
that with the Fobi pouch there is no intestional bypass done or she would
be dumping like crazy you are what you put into your body

I think all the responses have been pretty hard on Roseanne. I dont
personally care for the woman but I still feel some measure of compassion
for the failure. Do alcoholics feel this way about someone who falls off
the wagon? Do we feel this way about people when their diets
"fail" If we were all able to use the "tools" of
weight loss products we would never have had to have the surgery. Havent we
all tried hynotism, ear staples, weight watchers, these were also
"tools" we were given. Are you saying that weight loss surgery is
the only tool that works? These responses sound like snobbishness to me.
She may have chosen the wrong surgery for her, that's a given. All the more
reason all pre-ops CAREFULLY consider their own lifestyles and consider all
the different surgeries and choose the one that fits their lifestyle. Dont
rush into surgery because someone else had some success or is pressuring
you to select "their" procedure. Be honest with yourself.
If Roseanne had the DS proceudre and had not gained back some weight
would we be talking like this about her, with such derision? She has
failed at weight loss surgery and others have too. I feel bad about that.
She doesnt make weight loss surgery look bad. Her story just underscores
the importance of choosing the surgery option that fits the kind of person
you are. That's all.
