Question:
Has anyone heard of this type of operation? How does it differ from the RNY?
I was told by another doctor that my surgeon does this type of surgery, have not gone to see him yet . Have first visit on November 28. Would like to know if this is as effective as the RNY etc. If anyone can refer me to a website with info. about this, would be greatly appreciated. — Luanne K. (posted on October 4, 2000)

I think you are referring to the biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal
switch. You could try www.duodenalswitch.com for more info

Please be sure that it IS the "BPD" (with or without DS) that
they are referring to and not the "JIB", or intestinal bypass.
The "gastric" bypass, bypasses the stomach and is safe, with
proper precautions and supplementation. The old intestinal bypass is no
longer done in the US because it invairably resulted in severe nutritional
deficiences and long term health problems. I understand it is still done
in Canada, however. I have met several people who had one of these done in
the 70's, got sick unto death, had it reversed, had a VBG, then revised to
RNY. Might be easier to go with the BPD or BPD/DS or RNY to start--the
newer generation surgeries than the older models. Some of the JIB have
permanent damage that can never be reversed and I find that a very sobering
thought.
