Question:
Can we or can we not drink Carbonation Drinks?

Hi All, My surgeon told me that carbonation drinks were out. That there is studies that show that carbonation stretches the new stomach. I really hope that the Doctors on here can shed light on this. I am dying for my diet 7Up. Thanks. Hi. I had my surgery in Oct. of 1998 and I can eat or drink anything I want. I know there are people who cannot drink carbonated drinks but I think everyone is different with what they can tolerate.

I had open RNY with a 1cc micro pouch 16mo. ago. I have lost 159# so far. I did not drink pop for the first 8 mo. Then when I did drink pop I drank flat pop with almost no fizz. I did try regular pop but found it hurt my belly so I went back to the unfizzy stuff. Now I find I prefer it that way. I usually drink diet pepsi or most often Diet Vernors. I just take the top off it before I go to bed and it's just right in the am. Any more questions? Feel free to write me back. Good Luck, God Bless!!Jan Terry

My doctor has cafeine free soft drinks at his support group meetings. I only heard about no carbonation at the begining while you are still healing, but after that ???. I drink Diet Pop and do just fine.

I tried a few sips of soda the other night - maybe about 1 oz total. The first I had in 3 1/2 months. I thought I was going to die!!!! The pain was unbelievable. I, with a very high treshold of pain level who had no morphine pump or spinal and almost no pain for my open RNY (6/17/99), was in agony for the next 12 hours. And I was a confirmed Pepsi-holic before the surgery! Like you said - You're dying for a diet 7-up. You honestly will think so, too.

I don't have any problem with Diet Soda's. I don't enjoy them like I did pre-op because I can gulp them. You have to drink slowly because of all the gas bubbles associated with the carbonation.

Hi--I am six weeks postop (open RNY). I can drink diet sodas, but I don't like all the gas bubbles, so I usually choose not to. Anyway, for some reason, they just don't taste as good as before. Hope this helps.

I would be careful with carbonated beverages. I had my gastric bypass surgery with the Fobi pouch 1 1/2 years ago and I can now drink soda ,in a glass that has set for a while with ice. Never from a can. I don't know about stretching the new stomach. I have had a bad stomach ache from gassy foods, nothing that a few gas x pills won't cure. A few good burps and I was fine. All I can say is try it.Walking around after you drink soda helps too.

My doctor recently said there were studies on this subject. I was able to drink pop after a few months. Some never do. Some can within a few months. I do have a disruptible staple line, but after 5 years, I'm still OK. It's always best to do what your doctor says, but you asked for input. My husband is 4 yrs & he also drinks pop. We still avoid milk & sugar, don't graze and don't drink with meals, though.

Hi. I want you to try this. Take a zip lock baggie. Pour a soda in it and zip it up. You will notice the baggie getting bigger and bigger. eventually it will pop. This is the demonstration my support group used to show how carbination reacts in your new stomach. As for me, my dr. pepper is not worth me gaining back the weight Ive lost! Take care

I had diet Sprite diluted half and half with water on my first pre-op day. It caused some distress, but soon I started burping. The next day I was allowed undiluted Diet Coke from the can. I gotta have my pop, but I don't drink the two liters that I did pre-op. It still causes burps, but it's worth the 12 ounces I have every day. Brenda, 15 days post-op.

I am 7 weeks post op and I have been drinking maybe two regular sodas a day and it definitely has stretched my stomach pouch and I am regretting it. A nurse told me in the hospital that after her RNY she drank regular 7up...so I listened to her instead of the doctors. I have to say I'm as badly addicted to sodas as some people are to alcohol...all it took was one drink!

I have heard both yes and no. I had lap band, so I know I'm a little different. I drink diet sodas with no problem. For some people, the carbonation causes quite a bit of discomfort. I was told to wait a month after surgery by my doctor.
