Question:
My Surgeon recommends that I use a nutrionist for my post-op
diet. It is kind of expensive for me since my insurance doesn;t cover dieticians. Does anyone know if there are support groups in the Washington D.C., Maryland Area that teaches what to eat and how to eat post-op. Thanks. — bim O. (posted on August 19, 1999)

Dieticians & nutritionists tend to know how to keep normal people at a
normal weight with normal food. Unfortunately, we don't fit into that
category and often they "fatten us up" unknowingly. My doctor
recommends absolutely NO mlk or suagr at all, forever. We take high
quality protein supplements and a certain set of vitamins known to be lost
with bariatric suregries. We also do not "graze" or drink with
meals. Now, you will find ALL kinds of info by hanging out on the lists.
Some doctors forbid carbonation foever, ours only in the beginning. Some
automatically give B12 by shot or pills, ours only when labs indicate. So,
they're ALL so very different. Watch the lists, check the stats, and
approach those who are being successful. Find out what they did that got
'em to goal weight and what's holding 'em there. We're all a bit different,
but we ALL avoid sugar, we all work to ingest protein and we all pay some
attention to what we eat, though nothing like "dieting". That's
my opinion of what I woudl do today, 5 yrs post-op, after all the stumbling
and bumbling I did!

I am a dietitian in Fairfax working with Dr. Anez and Dr. Roll. We have a
support group that meets at Fair Oaks Hospital on the 3rd Monday of the
month and at our Woodbridge office on the 4th Monday of the month. Just
e-mail me if you'd like more info. There are dietitians that specialize in
this area like I do.
