Question:
Inexpensive good protein poweders ???
I am having surgery April 28th. I have been researching protein powsders, and ALL of them are SOOO expensive. My family is on food stamps and I know they do not cover protein shakes. DOes anyone know of any good ones that are inexpensive, but have all the vitamins and minerals in them??? — shalandar (posted on April 8, 2004)

Another alternative would be non-fat dry milk. It is high in protien and
can be mixed into many things. Added to skim milk it adds additional
protien. You can also add it to puddings. You can get this in the
grocery, probably with the food stamps, near the canned milks and powdered
beverages.

If you can tolerate milk products look for Hoods Carb Countdown Milk it has
12 gram of protein and only 3carbs it comes in fat free, 2%, Whole and
chocolate. It is really very good and when you are first out of surgery
you might be able to drink a couple of glasses a day. Also I don't know if
you can get slim fast with stamps but they have a new low carb one that
isn't bad and has 20 grams of protein.
I also found a protein powder called Any Whey it is tastless and I sprinkle
on my food 17 grams of protein per scoop sometime when I am in a hurry I
just put a scoop in the carb countdown milk and that is 29 grams of
protein. But everyone has different taste. I would say go to a healthfood
store or nutrition store and see if they sell individual packets of the
different proteins to see what you like cuz what does well for one doesn't
always do well for you. Good Luck, Nancy

Because Im on disability and have fd stamps, I get most of my proteins from
my foods, I sometimes will buy carb solutions from wal-mart for $8.??
dollars. vanella and choc flavors. it's petty good to me. and cheap enough
to buy often.

I buy Champion Whey Stack from www.dpsnutrition.com and with shipping one
five-p0und container comes to just under $30.00. For this I get 71
servings (one scoop each) with 130 calories, 4 grams carb (1.5g fiber), and
23 grams of protein. It comes to less than .43 cents per serving. When
you break it down like this, it really isn't that expensive on a daily
basis. Or at least I don't think so. Nina in Maine

i sometimes use the carb Solutions powder from walmart. It is 8.96 a can
for 15 servings and has 21g Protein per serving when mixed with water.
With milk, 30g protein. Two cans is a months supply of one shake per day .
Or use the dry milk you can get at the store on food stamps. Each eight
ounces has 8g protein. So does skim or 2% milk. So, take eight ounces of
skim milk and read on the box and use the amount of dry milk to make eight
ounces and toss it in the skim milk. 16 g Protein right there. If you
want more, put it in a blender, add two or three ice cubes and two
Tablespoons peanut butter. 24g Protein there and all on the food stamps.
Good luck. Try to eat as m uch of your protein as you can.

I was recently laid off for 2 years, so I'm strapped for money as well, but
please don't risk your health by not getting some protein in. If you are
RNY, it will be hard to absorb enough protein from the amount of meat
you'll be able to eat. Milk (powdered or not) probably won't give you
enough protein either. RNYs don't have much access to the stomach enzyme
needed to convert the proteins found in milk.
If there is a Vitamin Shoppe around you, try their store brand whey protein
called Body Tech. It's just like Designer Whey protein and is cheaper. A
5 lbs. jug is about $28 or so and will last you quite awhile. Carb
Solutions will work in a pinch, but ounce for ounce, Body Tech is a lot
cheaper. Otherwise, check for sales online. The ossg-protein yahoo group
is a great resource for finding sales on protein.

I buy now the Dr. Phil shakes at Wal-mart. They have 26 grams of protein in
them and I add 1/2 cup of milk, whcih makes each shake about 30 grams of
protien. You can get 4 shakes for about 5 or 6 dollars and I really like
them. I buy them buy the week so it doesn't seem so expensive. Thanks!
