Question:
I am drinking far more than I did before the surgery ... but still seem dehydrated?
I am getting close to my 64 oz. of water each day as recommended. However, I still seem to be somewhat dehydrated. I rarely go to the restroom and when I do there is not much passed. I am not drinking caffeine or eating a large amount of salt. I don't feel as though I have water retention. Can anyone relate? Thanks! — tangela (posted on June 11, 2003)

The same thing happened to me right after surgery! I was about one month
out before things got back to normal. I would drink, drink, drink, and go
to the bathroom and NOTHING! I think I read something about the body
absorbing extra fluid while it adjusts to the new digestive path.

I am also drinking close to my quota of water but my skin looks dry. Also
when I go to the bathroom it is very light but I go good most of the time.
Sometimes as I finish it burns for some reason.

Just food for thought, but wouldn't be a bad idea to get tested for a
urinary tract infection even though you are not typically symptomatic.

My doctor told me that I was hydrated as long as my urine was very pale
yellow and not dark. The darker it is, the less hydrated you are. Good
luck! Cheryl, Lap RNY 6/2/03 - 20 lbs

Tangela, you didn't say how far post-op you were, but that happened to me
early post-op as well. I drank so much, and my doctor said my urine should
look almost clear and I should be going more than I used to, but it didn't
work out like that. After a few months, my body adjusted and everything was
normal. It also couldn't hurt to get more than the daily required amount
in, although I know it can be hard to do. I get atleast 80-90oz water a day
and feel better. Goodluck to you :-)
