Question:
Can anyone help with protein option other than shakes, powdered drinks.
I am nearly 6 weeks out and barely getting 30 grams of protein in a day. I know that is not enough but can not stand the powdered drinks or liquid protein drinks either. I am only eating 2 oz of food 4-5 times a day. Any ideas for high protein foods? I use Procel powder but it takes so much to get in the 60 grams I just can't do it. Help! — Barbara S. Isopure Zero Carb Grape Frost. 40 gr protein per bottle.
Thin like koolaide. I love it. They have other flavors but the Grape frost
is the best to me. You can purchase it at most Gym's.

Hi- I know what you mean about the powdered drinks- I have not had much
luck with them either. However, I recently purchased the "apple
ecstasy" Nectar protein powder and I love it. It tastes like apple
juice (even my 5 year old like it- and he is picky) you mix 1 scoop with 8
ounces of water (and it mixes well with a spoon) for 23 grams of protein.
It does not have a protein aftertaste, or smell, which is what turned me
off of so many of the other drinks. Not sure what your doctor has you
eating at 6 weeks out, but at 8 weeks I started on protein bars, and the
EAS AdvantEdge bars are pretty good, they are less than 2 ounces each (the
smallest ones that I have found), with 25g per bar, that is what I have for
breakfast every morning. The cookies and Cream is my favorite flavor, with
the chocolate peanut butter being second. I love the Detour and U-Turn
bars, but it is probably too soon for you to eat those, as they are heavier
and higher in carbs. Good Luck to you! 11/20/02 Open, 295/197/140

I use isopure as well, I believe someone mentioned it below. I get it at
GNC or Vitamin Shoppe. I also use protein bars. They may be a little dense
for you right now, but maybe in a couple weeks it could be better for you.
I also used to eat these sugar-free cookies called "sport
cookies" from protocookie. They had no sugar and had 15 grams of
protein and tasted like a real soft cookie- they're more like a protein bar
nutrition wise than a snack cookie. I believe the website is
protocookie.com, but I could be wrong. Goodluck to you :-)

I couldn't tolerate the powders either. I order Proteinex from Walgreens.
15g per oz. I mix it in OJ or Crystal lite and can't taste it at all.

Barbara,
I am 3 months out and have the exact same problem. I tried lots of
different shakes and could not stomach them. I do the carnation instant
breakfast sugar free. A scambled egg and lots of tuna and fish have helped
with my protein problem. I ordered a lot of samples from vitalady but so
far no luck with one I like. My taste buds for drinks are a lot different
than before. Good luck and as you can eat more things I think protein will
be easier for you

I hate HATE bars and shakes...and have always gotten my protein from food
(with doctors blessings). I eat a LOT of moz string cheese (7 grams per 1
one-ounce stick) and am up to four sticks for breakfast each morning. I
love jerky too and it's high protein. Makes a great meal or mid-day snack.
I eat a lot of steak or chicken cut up small into a green salad with ranch
dressing(make the salad a couple hours in advance so the dressing can break
down the veggies and meat - easier to chew). Cottage cheese, tuna, eggs
(if you can stand them - took me a few months to enjoy them again), canned
corned beef (very tender, cut tiny and easy on the stomach)....lots of
options available to you. Best of luck to you!

Some of my old standby proteins that I can always count on going down good
are: boiled/steamed shrimp; cottage cheese with washed diced peaches;
string cheese (I like to eat with mild salsa); 3 oz pouch of albacore white
tuna (23 g); Turkey Store Shredded BBQ Turkey (20 g per 1/2 cup and very
low carbs and fat - amazing find and one of my favorites); Manwhich made
with ground round to lower the fat and keep it from getting greasy;
Fazoli's parmesan chicken (minus the pasta and breadsticks) - 1 chicken
breast is two very filling meals; mushroom, onion and cheese omelet (I like
egg beaters best - usually ends up being 3 meals). I venture into other
things at times but these are the things I can count on. I also put 1
slice of reduced fat cheese on the BBQ turkey and the Manwhich to bump the
protein higher and provide a 2nd flavor/taste. I found early on that if it
was soft, chopped or shredded I could count on it working well for me.
Steak has not gone well. Anything dense and dry - forget it! Use fat free
gravies and other kinds of safe sauces to help when trying new foods,
especially denser foods. It really does make a huge difference. Good
Luck!

My staple foods at that point were cottage cheese, tuna salad, yogurt and
soft boiled eggs. Next was chicken parm that I made myself stewed in a ton
of sauce to keep it very tender. With 2 ounces 4-5 times a day you should
easily be able to get more protein once you find what you best toleraste.
My best advice is to buy small quantities of everything until you find
those foods. Good Luck!!!!

There is a great tasting fruit flavored protein powder called Nectar. It
comes in 3 flavors, mixes nicely with water and has 0 sugar and 0 carbs,
with 46 grams of protein per 2 scoops.
I bought it on http://www.wlssuccess.com/index.htm

Canned (or in a pouch) salmon, tuna, shrimp (I love any of those mixed with
a small amount of Thai green curry paste and a smidge of mayo!), cottage
cheese, cheese, soy cheese, any fresh or frozen fish (no breading and
chopped up fine in a food processor or blender), Rocamojo coffee
alternative (made from soy and depending on the blend, 7 or 13 gr protein
per cup--efoodpantry.com has best price right now). Hormel has a wonderful
canned chicken and ham (I rinse them well to reduce the sodium, as I do
with most canned things when possible). Lean ground beef (if you can, ask
the butcher people to grind it AGAIN extra fine or do it yourself after it
is cooked). Eggs if you can tolerate them (I can only eat them in egg drop
soup, alas! Any other way, even EggBeaters, comes up for HOURS. But
everyone is different and eggs are excellent cheap source of complete
protein amino acids). And once in a while when I'm in a hurry, Atkins
protein bars. I will be two months 3 June and still cannot tolerate
anything that hasn't been chopped (partly because I am missing most of my
molars, I guess). Best luck to you, and as someone else said, chop it up
and make sure you have sauce or dressing to moisten it up. Eat slowly with
something new and wait in between bites to see if it sits well. For me--if
it is going to come up, it comes up in about five to ten minutes after I
swallow it. Best wishes and luck.----peace--terry

I, too, never could stand the protein drinks. Recently, at 8 weeks out,
I'm finding that the Nectar protein and Rocamojo coffee substitute are
quite drinkable, though they do give me a tummy ache if I try to drink too
much. During the first several weeks after surgery, I wasn't able to eat
enough protein, so my dietitian suggested that I drink skim milk with dry
milk powder mixed in (2 1/4 tablespoons per 8 ounces of milk). I could
count 3/4 of that as liquid intake, too. Two 8 oz glasses of this
"double protein" milk a day really saved me until I was able to
eat a little more. Some people have trouble with milk (either the lactose
or the natural sugar), so be careful, and as always, check with your doctor
or dietitian first.

I cant stand powdered protein. It is clumpy even with a mixer.
I use Detour bars, Nectar, Sci Fit Amino Infusion 2000 and my own recipe
for protein bars and 'cookies'.
The Amino Infusion 2000 comes in several different flavors. All of which
are 100 times better than powder. It comes in a liquid form and you add 6
tablespoons to 8 ounces of water to get 60 grams of protein. Wha la! Done!
