Question:
I am now 4 1/2 months post -op & I'd like to know if I'm doing ok?

I would like to you all to review what a typical day for me is & tell me good or bad what you think! I start off the day with a glass of OJ & then I'm off to take my son to school. I then go to the YMCA & I work out for at least one to two hours everyday....well at least 4 days a week. I use the stair master for about 40 min, I walk, bike & do weights certain days of the week. I do Yoga once a week & I try to swim at least twice a week...but that doesn't always happen. After I leave, I go home fix lunch ... which is normally a "Smart Ones" meal... I can eat half & sometimes the whole dinner...which is 9 0z. Is this normal??? Now the dinner I eat are mostly Szechuan Style Vegetables & chicken...not HEAVY stuff. Around 1pm or so I will have a snack... not always good things... sometimes some WOW chips or an organge, wheat crks. Then I eat a normal dinner... ckn, fish or porkchops... I would guess I eat maybe 5 oz total. Then around 8pm I eat another snack. And yes through out the day I'm getting in my liquids. Now I do have to be truthful...I don't take my vitiams like I should... but does that truly help with the weight loss? I see I'm starting to ramble... I just want to make sure I'm doing okay... I don't go back to see my Dr for another month & half. Thanks ahead of time for any input...    — Beth G. (posted on May 6, 2003)

Sounds like you have a lot of carbs and not a lot of protein. Try the shakes until you find one you like. Sub the OJ for water in the morning (or Crystal lite). So if vitamins don't help you lose weight you're not going to take them? Well, not taking them will help you lose a lot more than weight...you'll be malnourished and have more serious problems than obesity. Take those vites! You're not doing ok if you're not taking your vitamins. Do it now.God Bless.

Beth, you really need to eat more. From what it looks like- sounds like you're getting 2 meals and 2 snacks. You should be getting 4-5 small meals plus a protein shake or bar, and then can have a snack or two. Not to lecture you or anything- but you really need to eat more- that will also help with your weight loss- at this stage the more you eat the more you lose. You need to have breakfast in the morning- have an egg or yogurt or some deli meats and cheese. Then work out- you're basically working out with no fuel to burn except OJ, which is just sugar. You can have the OJ, but you should limit it to 4oz and make sure you have breakfast with it (well, not the same time b/c cant wat when you drink, but you know what I mean) I think the lunch and dinner choices are fine. And when you have a snack, make it a protein snack- pnb and a cracker or some cheese or nuts, even frozen yogurt. You need more protein! <p> Also, as to the vitamins, they don't help aid in weight loss- they help keep you healthy and alive. It seems like a drag to take so many, but it is ESSENTIAL. I'm not lecturing- sorry- the importance of vitamins is sometimes nderestimated after WLS. But if you don't take them, you're going to lead yourself into all sorts of health problems. Malnutrition, osteoporosis, variety of deficiencies, etc. try to keep all your pills in a pill box, so you know what you have to take daily- that helps me. You're doin great with exercise and liquids it sounds like- but get in that protein and vitamins! Goodluck to you!

I agree with the others, that you are not getting in enough protein. Change that orange juice to an egg (hard boiled travel well) or a protein shake on the go. Your exercise routine is awesome-good job. Vitamins are oh, so important, for our long term health. I highly recommend you get into a routine or someday you will end up with irreverable osteoporosis and other lovely things that we can all live without.

Beth, I am also 4 1/2 months post op (lap rny 12/23/02) I don't think you're getting enough protein. Instead of starting the day with OJ, try a protein drink or some yogurt or some carnation instant breakfast. I think starting the day with a big bang of protein is key. I try to have 30 grams for breakfast. I'm not a carb counter, but it also seems like you are doing a bit much of that. Oh yeah, and take those vitamins! BTW, I've lost 110 pounds - only 20 more til my goal!

Your vitamins are not for weight loss, silly. They're to help you live longer!! I agree with everyone - you need more food and protein. You're burning more energy/fuel/calories than you're intaking. Not a good scenario-starvation mode comes to mind. Contact your nutritionist and ask her. I bet you could eat more (including those carbs) than the rest of us, because you're working out ALOT. Good luck and keep trucking! You're an inspiration to us ALL.

I just wanted to say thank you for all the input....This has forced me to see that yes I do need my protein & of course my vitiams. MY problem is that I can't find a protein that I like! But I do know that I do need it. Again thanks. :0) Have a wonderful day!

I didn't see this addressed. One thing to keep in mind is that you NEED to eat in the morning within a couple hours of getting up. Drinking a protein drink would count as eating :>) Starting your day with OJ is starting your day with sugar and really giving nothing to wake-up your metabolism. Many obese people have discovered that they gain weight even eating only one meal a day simply because they don't give enough consistent fuel to their body to get the fat burning maching going. Best of luck to you!
