Question:
Anyone diagnosed with low blood sugar a year or more after surgery?
I am nearly 15 months post op, down 130# and I have never been diagnosed with any type of Diabetes. I weigh 154# and my surgeon and PCP both agree that I should not go any lower. Now I am being tested for low blood sugar. The principal of my school had to call 911 and the paramedics came and got me because of slurred speech, confusion and I staggered when I walked. On a lighter note the last time the paramedics came to get me the paramedics were discussing the best way to get a 300# person into the ambulance and how many people it would take to do it. At least this time that was not a topic of conversation. How do you deal with it? I am very interested in knowing because this is so totally new to me. I didn't think Diabetes would be a problem after my surgery. Thanks a million!! Gail Brown — dramamomma (posted on April 26, 2003)

Gail, I was diagnosed with hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) apx 10 months
post op, we could have had it long before we ever lost weight and just
didnt know it cuz we kept feeding ourselves now we dont eat as much so its
showing the signs and symptoms of it...I remember getting so dizzy I
thought I was gonna pass out......now my friend is a year and a few months
out and she also was diagnosed with it. If we keep our sugars elevated and
eat small amounts of food every couple of hours we should be ok, this is
what my pcp recommended but follow ur drs. recomendations. good luck to you

YOu've gotten diabetes (high blood sugar) confused with hypoglycemia (low
blood sugar) confused. I agree with the previous poster. You may have
always had it and not been aware of it as you were self-medicating :>)
If you do have it just make sure you eat 5 or so times a day. Doesn't have
to be large amounts, just healthy snacks - nuts, jerky, cheese, peanut
butter, etc.

Many of us suffer from reative hypoglycemia. You might want to pop over to
the Grad list to open a discussion on it. -
