Question:
YIKES! I'm 3mo post-op & now 7 weeks pregnant....Help!

I was told that with all of the physical problems that my body had, conceiving would be near impossible..well, God had other plans in mind for my husband and me cause here I am 3mo post-op and alittle over 7 weeks pregnant. I'm considered extremely high risk not only due to the recent bypass but because of the blood clots I developed in my lungs 4 days after the surgery and the blood thinners I am now on. I can barely tolerate much food as it is and now I have morning sickness that comes and goes throughtout the day and the drs are concerned about my nutritional intake. Today I have been ordered to bed-rest due to major cramping and some light spotting. The good news, though, is that we were able to see the baby's heart beat..Yea GOD! Has anyone else been where I am. I desperatly need all the advice and encouragement I can get! Thanks!    — Karen P. (posted on February 11, 2003)

This is a miracle baby!!! There is a yahoo group devoted to post-op women who are/were pregnant. I'm sure there will be many questions answered there by those that have "been there, done that". Good luck to you and your miracle baby. <p> http://groups.yahoo.com/group/OSSG-pregnant/

I'm surprised that you felt "well enough" at around a month post op to be "frisky" with the hubby. ;) Best of luck to you.

hi there :) while i have never been in the situation of being three months post op and pregnant, i will tell you that i too had some spotting right around the 7 th week and they did an altra sound and detected a good heart beat, there was really nothing they could tell me but to take it easy and see what happens, this didnt help ease my mind at all but i went on to have a healthy pregnancy and the baby was fine! i want to wish you all the best of luck and ill say a special prayer for you! i know that with this surgery, as a rule, were suppose to be high protein, low carb but at this point id say if you find foods that stay down and you are able to get the extra nutritition in thats needed, eat it! theres always time for after the baby to lose the weight!! all my love! :)

Good morning Karen, more than anything in this world, I want to be pregnant. I'm 6 months post op and am feeling wonderful. I want to tell you that this is truly a gift from God and I will be holding you up in prayer. Our God is an Awesome God and He will keep you doing this time. I'm not sure how old you are, but make sure that you get your needed prenatal vitamins. My surgeon prescribed two a day and I'm not pregnant. If you can, because of the lack of food, try and take two prenatals a day, if your doctor says that it's ok. Take care of yourself my sister and please stay encouraged.

HI KAREN, I AM 6 MONTHS POST OP AND 17 WEEKS PREGNANT WITH OUR 5TH CHILD. I WAS BLOWN AWAY WHEN THE DOCTOR TOLD ME THAT MY FEELING TIRED WAS NOT JUST BECAUSE OF THE SURGERY??? WHO WOULD HAVE GUESSED??? GOOD LUCK. I WILL KEEP YOU IN MY PRAYERS BUT DEFINITELY LOOK INTO THE YAHOO GROUP AND CHECK THE LIBRARY HERE FOR PREGNANCY AFTER SURGERY. I FOUND A LOT OF USEFUL INFORMATION ON BOTH. BEST WISHES, SHERRY

I too had cramping and spotting around the same time. I had some bed rest and got through it (PTL). I think it was Jr. just digging in. Still, come one over to the OSSG site- you will find others just like you (same time out, same concerns) and you can ask all sorts of questions. The message board is somewhat hard to read like our own message board (questions get answered, and are posted days later) but you can ask people to e-mail you directly.... As for nutrition- there are MANY women who are so sick the first months, they get nothing in... There are countries that have very poor nutrition and population is still thriving. Hang in there...

My Dr. said that can be very, very dangerous to get pregnant during the year following surgery, possible neurological damage, not enough food and vitamins getting to the child, as well as to the pregnant person...I don't mean to scare anyone, but this is what he said. He told me to use 2 forms of birth control during the first year as weight is lost our ability to get pregnant becomes very high if protection is not used...

there was a lady on spotlighthealth.com a member whose handle was nursie. she got pregnant three weeks from her wls and just delivered a healthy baby girl. i believe she lost sixty pounds during her pregnancy. i don't know her email but if you post on the surgery support board, someone will give it to you. good luck.

Be sure you talk to a dietician....it is very important during the first trimester of pregnancy to increase fat intake to ensure the baby's neurological development. That's one of the reasons why it's so dangerous to get pregnant so soon after WLS. I've known different people who this has happened to, but you have to follow dietary requirements set by a doctor/dietician to ensure your baby's health.

I had a baby four years ago. I didn't have the wls but I was also spotting. I spotted for three months. The doctors could not come up with any real reason why. (I may have been pregnant with twins and lost one.) The baby came out healthy. Also I had morning sickness the WHOLE nine months. I got sick when I saw a bug someone stepped on. Pretty bad! Make sure to do what ever your doctor says and know that you have been blessed twice. Once for the wls and second for the baby.
