Question:
Has anyone had this surgery that had Diabetes Type I

I am getting closer to my surgery date (2wks to be exact) and have yet to meet or speak with anyone that had this surgery that had Diabetes Type I< Type I is where you where diagnosed under age 18 and will have it for life,no matter how big or skinny you are. I just happen to be big and they state this will help my blood sugars, But I really want to speak with someone who has been through this before who has the type of diabetes called gestational diabetes so learn from your experinces. I am on an Insulin pump. My questions are did your diabetes really get much better and where you able to lower your insulin amount.. AND has anyone that was diagnosed as a child ever come off the insulin all together. Thankyou Surgery date 02/17/03    — Rebekah P. (posted on February 3, 2003)

Hi. I'm a type 1 diabetic since the age of 4 and I'm now almost 33. I haven't had the bypass surgery yet, I was recently approved from my insurance so hopefully it won't be too much longer! I also am on the insulin pump. The way I understand it, your insulin demands will go way down. First of all, you won't be bolusing as much for your meals because you won't be eating as many carbs as before. Secondly, as you lose the weight, your insulin demands will lower because there's less of you. It's not possible for any type 1 diabetic to EVER come off insulin all together. Our immune system had destroyed our pancreas's islet cells that manufacture insulin way back when we were diagnosed with diabetes and nothing will reverse that (yet!). The only things I'm scared of are what will happen with low blood sugars with the size of our stomach (small and can't fit much in there to compensate) and the dumping possibility because of the carbs.

Thankyou for your response Connie. I have done one thing I have ordered 24 emergency kits for low blood sugar so that I dont have to worry about eating if my sugar drops, I will just take a shot. That has been my biggest fear. Thankyou
