Question:
For those who are at goal. How do you stop losing & maintain your weight?

I had Open RNY Nov 2001. I weighed 237 pounds & had a goal of 140. I am now down to 122 & seem to keep losing. Not much, maybe 1-3 pounds a month. My family is worried about me thinking I am getting "too" skinny, however, I like the size I am but don't want to lose anymore. How do I maintain this weight? I can eat whatever I want but still cannot eat much at one time. Thanks...    — Lori M. (posted on January 15, 2003)

Lori, it sounds like we're twins!! I had my surgery 11/5/01. I initially weighed in at 248 and I had a goal weight of 130. I'm at 128 but was losing and wasn't trying to. I've went from eating 3 meals a day to eating 6 smaller meals a day and increasing the calories. I haven't gained or lost any more weight over the past couple of months.

I've been thinking about that a lot lately. I'm actually 10 lbs from my goal weight...I initially wanted to get to 135 (my current weight) but decided to go for another 10. I'm already in weight loss mode...watch food quantity/calories/ quality of food, and exercise. I'm terrified of backing off to maintain, I know I still have a 10 lb buffer zone, but then what? If I simply don't "bottem out" at around 125 with the regime I'm following now, I'm going to go from exercising 5 days a week to 4, then 3...I'm too scared to mess with my food routine though, I could so easy become an over eater again. I still love to eat and eat small meals all day long as it is. Do you exercise? Maybe you can slow that down, or (gasp) try to eat a few higher calorie snacks through the day. I wish I had an answer for you. I hope others have some worthwhile suggestions. Take care. -Kim open RNY 7/17/01 -147

Still being a good 10-15 from goal and struggling to get it off, I envy you!! With that said, I have read where those that do not want to lose anymore or want to reverse and gain just reverse the pouch rules. Add some snacks, add some calories each day, ease up on the exercise, drink with meals...its not hard.

Congrats on your success! Have you thought of adding protein shakes to your day? That way, you'd get more calories in, but they'd be protein (so no triggering binging on carbs or sugars), and in a liquid form (so you wouldn't stretch your pouch). I know we WLSers tend to use them as meal substitutes or supplements in order to help us get in minimum protein requirements. But don't forget that body builders use 'em to bulk up on top of their regular caloric intake. So maybe extra protein shakes would help you stabilize, if you added two or three to your day. Just a thought!
