Question:
Amount of food 2 weeks post op.
This is my first time posting since open RNY 2 weeks ago. I have an embarassing concern, because already I think i am eating too much. My doctor sends us home on a regular diet --just minmalized, and I've not seenn him pst-op yet because he had an emergency, and I got turfed to a non-WLS surgeon for an 11 second check-up. Anyway, by 48 hrs. home from the hospital I was eating 2"x1" size lasagna, 4 bites of salad and 1/4 piece of bread at a sitting. Now at 2 weeks,, my husband can cut off the last 2-3 inches of his sub for me for a meal. I can probably eat this same amt. 3-4 times a day. I am VERY WORRIED, perhaps my surgeon didn't staple me enough. I am also worried, that I've essentially skirted this recovery without any negative events--my insides don't feel disrupted at all--having the flu would be worse. Please, please, tell me if my intake is far too great for two weeks out--I just can't believe I did all this--if I'm still eating too much. Can't tell you about weight loss because I don't have ascale, and like a said the YAHOO who examined me post-op never even mentioned it. Thank you all you wonderful people who have gotten me there and right up to here!!! — Wannabe A. (posted on November 29, 2002)

Personally, I don't think that I could eat 2-3 inches of a sub even now at
4 1/2 months.

It is amazing the variations in post-op diets that surgeons send people
home on. I was on a liquid diet for 2 weeks, pureed for another two weeks,
soft for another 2 weeks and only then was I allowed to progress to regular
food - one at a time... A healing pouch should be far too delicate to be
eating salads and breads and subs before a month or so...

If I were you, I'd be on the phone first thing Monday morning expressing my
concerns. And I would also try to watch my food intake - just because you
are physically able to eat something doesn't mean that you should. Limit
yourself to 2 oz of food at a sitting and have 5-6 small meals a day...JR

For the first 6 weeks my Surgeon has you eat only 3..2oz meals per day of
soft food. (cottage cheese,sf pudding, oatmeal, applesauce) plus drinking 2
Carnation Instant Breakfast drinks a day (add 1/2 cup non fat dried milk to
packet and 2 cups 1%milk).Drink 64 oz liquid per day (this includes the
milk in the carn instant) But, like the poster before said ask your Dr
Monday..starting out is very important. Good Luck Nancy Poe

Salad, bread, and pasta are hard on your healing pouch. Bread is hard to
digest and fills you up without providing the protein you need. Try to
stay with soft food and liquids as much as you can for at least a month.
Cottage cheese, tuna fish, yogurt, puddings, etc are all good. Make sure
you drink your water and get in your protein. At this stage you should be
drinking protein drinks as you're not able to take in enough protein
through food just yet. Just take it more slowly and give your pouch a
chance to heal and you'll do great.

First of all, I don't think you're eating too much, just making poor food
choices (as others have pointed out so aptly before). But hey, it's up to
you if you want to eat breads, pastas, etc. and what you're eating isn't
what you asked. Just how much. So no, I don't think you're eating too
much by volume - and you'll likely still loose weight even with poor food
choices, but eventually you'll stall at best, and get very ill at worst.
Secondly, it's kind of sad that you don't feel you suffered enough. Count
your blessings, call your doctor and get a referral to a WLS-knowledgable
nutritionist and be insistent! If he/she won't help you, then it's time to
start searching on your own. We are, after all, ultimately responsible for
our own health and well being. Good luck to you on your journey!

I too felt absolutely wonderful after less than 2 weeks post op. I too
felt as if I didn't even have the surgery and wondered if it really
happened. I don't think that you've done anything to your pouch, but like
everyone else be careful with the type of foods that you eat. Make sure
that you get your protein's in, things like chicken, fish, turkey, and
things of that nature. If you still have room then have some of the carbs.
I eat anything I want to eat, I just eat very very small portions of them.
Take care of yourself my sister and just be thankful that you are one of
the blessed ones.
Have a blessed day,
Lenay
