Question:
Since surgery has anyone experienced allergic reactions?
I'm 4 months post-op and take Synthroid, a thyroid medication, and about 4 weeks after surgery I started having hives and have had them since. I've been to my GP, an allergist and a thyroid specialist. My allergist says she thinks it's my thyroid itself not the medication, my thyroid specialist thinks it's the die in the medication. Just wondering if anyone has become allergic to medication or food since surgery. — Sharon O. (posted on November 14, 2002)

I'm shocked that someone else has had this same problem, as I had been
telling myself it must be coincidental that I have been breaking out in
rashes since surgery. Having never had any type of allergic reaction to
medications prior to surgery, I was at a loss to explain why I broke out in
a rash after being on Ursodiol (gall bladder medication prescribed after
surgery.) I discontinued the use of that medication, hoping for the best in
regards to my gall bladder. Several weeks ago I switched to calcium citrate
instead of the Tums I had been taking since surgery and I broke out in a
rash from the calcium pills too! What's with this?!

Yes, I am now intolerant or allergic to milk and MSG. Strange isn't it?
Good Luck.

hiya. i think that they (docs) still do not know all the effects of the
surgery! about 9 mos post op i developed a gluten intolerance - i sneeze,
get runny eyes and if i eat too much my chest tightens up and i cannot
breath! i keep benadryl with me in case of a bad 'attack"
it's common to be lactose intolerant because we do not have enough stomach
acid to digest milk but dairy products that are processed (cheese, yogurt,
ice cream) do not bother me. i drink Vitamite instead of milk and have no
probs with that.
good luck!
