Question:
can distal bypass patients eat caned nuts and can they consume suger?

i am having a distal bypass on november 12th, 2002 and recently ran into a gal that had the same surgery from my surgeon in augest 2002. she informed me that we cannot eat nuts no matter how well chewed and should avoid crunchy peanut butter and should consume smooth onlt due to the nuts can cause intestinal impaction. she also said that distal bypass patients can consume some sugers and don't dump like other bypass patients such as proximal. is this true?    — kimberly T. I had a proximal bypass, but I researched both distal and proximal and never ran across anything about nuts being a bad thing. My doctor told me nuts are fine as is crunchy peanut butter. I just have to make sure they are chewed well before I swallow. Intestinal impaction is a risk in the future for anyone who's had intestinal surgery. It just is, regardless of diet. I've never heard that about the sugar issue so hopefully someone more knowledgable gives you an answer.

Kimberly, I'm 18 months post op open RNY distal. I've lost 140 lbs. I still can't eat sugar or dairy. I don't even try. These are things that make me very nauseaous and I'm glad. They are what got me in trouble with my weight all my life. I do eat a few cashews once in while without any problem, but I didn't try them for the first six months. I wanted to make sure my pouch was healed thoroughly before putting anything to hard to digest in it. I never ever eat coconut. I was told it could cut your stomach so I just don't. Yes, I've given up somethings for life. One of them is the 140 lbs. that was killing me. Do I regret it? or miss those things...NEVER!!! I'm happier than I've ever been and wouldn't risk my success for anything that might go in my mouth and ruin what has happened for me. Good luck.

Kimberly, My dietician (she works in the same office as my surgeon) actually said nuts were fine. I eat peanuts (just a couple ounces) almost daily to satisfy my "crunching" cravings.... I have no problems with them.

Hi! I had a distal on the 20th of september. I am able to eat sugar and I am able to tolerate dairy and actually I eat a lot of cheese. I have not had any dumping at all since I was immediate post op.

I am distal. I eat nuts, no problem. Distals are more likely to dump. But that is not the point of avoiding sugar. The point is that we will regain as much as 100% of our weight if we mess with sugar. And yes, with a distal. I've now seen it several times and it scares me to death. I've regained a few pounds twice by getting too close the being comfortable with sugar. Been able to reverse that gain by getting back on the no sugar wagon, but it was less than 10# both times. Sugar is the one thing that can put me back where I started, even with an intact, radical distal.
