Question:
surgery coming up fast
My surgery is coming up fast (Oct 7th) and I'm starting to really wonder if I'm doing the right thing. I have two boys 10 & 7 and the thought of possibly leaving them without a mother kills me. I'm 5'4 and 256lbs. Is there anyone out there like me with kids. Did you talk to your kids? I really need some encouragement. — kelly M. (posted on September 29, 2002)

I had my lap rny 7-11-02, 12 wks postop and down 53.5#. I am a single
parent of an 11 year old girl. I sat her down and explained the entire
procedure to her. I explained what my cormorbidities (diabetes/high blood
pressure) could do to me in the long run and how this surgery would
probably make those disappear (it has!). I am a firm believer in being
honest and explaining the risks and benefits to our kids if they are old
enough to understand them. I told her that I had just as much chance of
being killed in a car wreck as I did dying during surgery. We came through
it fine! Good luck with your surgery!

Many post op's have children. Writing letters to them is a popular thing.
But try not to stress too much. The chances of you living a long and
healthy life is much greater once tou lose the weight. I know you want to
live to see your children grow up and get married and stuff. Obesity can
shorten your life by a lot. Gastric Bypass is the best thing I've ever
done. And although there are risks involved, every post op that I have
spoken to said that they wouldn't chance their decision to have WLS. Pray
about it, God is a God of peace. And talk to your children. I bet they want
you to be healthy. God Bless.
