Question:
what pain med will the dr give me since I am allergic to codiene, postop?

and also I just found out that my surgeon stopped using the morphine pump, he is using a little pain box thingy, does anyone have any clue as to what this is? he said he is trying to get away from all the narcotics after surgery. Thanks, Amy Stockle    — Amy S. (posted on September 6, 2002)

Amy, I am also allergic to codiene my doc gave me vicodin for pain post op, once i was off the morphine pump. This is the first that i have heard a doc not using a morphine pump. Wish i didn't have to use one. I felt so much better after i stopped using the pump. Don't have a clue on his little pain box thing sounds interesting. Good Luck

My doctor gave me Roxicette (sp?) in a liquid form. I only used half the bottle.

I didn't have an epidural or a pump for pain in the hospital. I could just ask for a morphine shot whenever I needed it via my IV. When I left the hospital I got a prescription for percoset, which I was allergic to. Then I got a prescription for meperagan fortis which gave me horrible leg cramps. By then I didn't really need pain meds so I just used tylenol at that point.

I'm allergic to codiene too. While still on IV I had morphine shots which were no problem for me. The worst part was waiting for the anestesia from surgery to wear off. I was totally out of it the first two days, not because of morphine but because of the anesthesia. After that I went on Toradol (sp?), then when I was out I used some Lortab 5/500 I had available. I think its not very feasible for a surgeon to expect you to just cold turkey, no pain killers after a major surgery. I've ran into a lot of doctors who avoid narcotics like Tylenol 3, Lortabs, etc like the plague. In my opinion they don't have a very good grasp on the idea of pain management. If handled properly to start off with in the long run you'll have less pain, and take less meds for it. Plus you'll get up and move around a lot sooner too. Anyhow, even without codeine you'll do fine, there's lots of other meds out there. And good luck!

sounds like he uses a TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) Unit.

I am allergic to codeine and morphine but was able to take demerol with equal amounts of compazine or Mepergan/Meperadine. I did better on those meds and did not have violent episodes of vomiting.
